Worth the but

First, great book. Second, it definitely helped with concepts that are more difficult or the case law is either muddy or archaically explained. However it was more in depth than the actual law studies and some of the concepts are "hidden" and you have to find what you are looking for through either a keyword search or finding the general topic and reading through.

Up until now, CW (Civil War) games have either taken a regimental approach for a more tactical game or a brigade-level view for a more grand tactical game - and gamers have plenty of both regimental or brigade level CW rule sets to choose from. However, both approaches have drawbacks. The pure regimental approach - such as in Johnny Reb - can make it difficult to fight a very large battle, while the brigade approach often fails to capture the unique feel of the CW where the actions of one regiment - such as the 20th Maine at Little Round Top - could turn a battle. Across A Deadly Field offers a game system that enables gamers to fight large battles in a relatively compact space, yet maintains the regimental focus and flavor appropriate to the conflict.

Across A Deadly Field uses a scale that can be described as a "telescoped" version of Johnny Reb III - with twice the ground and figure scale, and has individual regiments and batteries as the base element of maneuver:

- Ground Scale: 1" = 100 yards
- Time Scale: 1 turn = 20 minutes
- Regiment Scale: Two stands/bases per regiment
- Figure Scale: 1 figure = 60 men
- Gun scale: 1 gun = 1 battery

The big advantage of this approach is that the gamer is not required to rebase any figures from his existing Johnny Reb army, allowing for much easier conversion from the older game to Across A Deadly Field. The existing four-stand regiments become two different regiments of two stands each - his miniature army has, for gaming purposes, just doubled. This will hold an appeal for many gamers - they can either recreate smaller engagements in half the space that would once have been needed, or can game huge battles on a table that would once have only accommodated a small skirmish. In essence, Across A Deadly Field offers two games with a single, consistent basing system.

About the Author
In the field of tactical wargame designs, few designers have had as much impact as John Hill. In the 1970s, John started his own company to design and publish tactical and operational games that broke from traditional wargame mechanics. Realizing that he preferred designing wargames over running a business, John sold the company and became a freelance wargame designer. From then on, John's designs for Avalon Hill, SPI, SDC and others became noted for their innovative approaches to simulating unique tactical situations. In 1977, John designed Squad Leader for Avalon Hill. Squad Leader broke the mold for how tactical combat was portrayed on the gaming board, and its impact is still felt today. The first freelance wargame designer inducted into the Origins Hall of Fame, John is perhaps best known for his Johnny Reb rules for the Civil War. After 25 years, Johnny Reb - now into its third edition - remain as popular as ever. In the 1980s, John's flair for innovative tactical simulation brought him to the attention of the Government's Defense and Intelligence communities and, for the next 16 years, he worked as a senior military analyst. Following a final four year tour at Los Alamos National Laboratory, John retired from government work and returned to gaming, updating and republishing many of his older designs and, once again, exploring new directions in tactical simulation. The author lives in Santa Fe, NM.

Johnny Reb's Next Evolution

This set of Regimental rules is the quasi- next evolution of the Johnny Reb system. It uses 2- and 3-stand regiments and allows very large actions to be played out on the table while still operating from a regimental tactical system, but for all intents and purposes is a brigade-level game (regiments have to operate within the brigade structure to be effective in this game).

The rules themselves are very well laid out and illustrated. While I would have preferred a more "Case, Sub-Case" layout, Osprey uses bolded headers, with rules beneath. There is quite a bit of rules repetition which is good, since it helps the rules sink in. From *only* reading the rules, it's hard to conceptualize how play works, but once you get a couple of regiments on the table and try to start maneuvering it all falls into place.

John Hill (the author/designer) states in the foreword that he was not permitted to include other bits -- the design had to be a book only. Though it's not said, I think that perhaps Mr. Hill would have liked to incorporate order chits for this design. I have only played it in a limited, solitaire, small-scale fashion, but these seem to be really good rules for larger battles. There is a plethora of charts and remembering which rules apply when is a bit a problem right now; but, I suspect that they will be quickly internalized and not be much of a problem at all.

One of the major complaints with Johnny Reb was the charge/counter-charge/resolve charge systems. This has been simplified in this game, but will still probably have you reaching for the rulebook the first few times you have charges. I have always felt that the complicated charge system from Johnny Reb (and the simplified, but still somewhat complicated system for ADF) produces historically plausible results in a much more simulative way than other ACW miniatures games.

I think this is an excellent ruleset, and the Osprey production quality is simply brilliant.

I plan on painting and basing my regiments using 6mm figures, but using 15mm rules (4 figs = 1 fig for combat losses).

A useful addition to the Civil War gamer's library

The publisher of these books seems completely incapable of giving accurate descriptions of the book contents. While this one's description is nowhere nears as misleading as War in the East, it still falls short. From the description: "Battles such as Shiloh, Stone River, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, Chattanooga and Atlanta are presented in great detail, offering players of Across a Deadly Field not only a range of scenario options, but the ability to play through a full campaign."

What the book actually contains is:
Four scenarios covering the first day of Shiloh (Apr 6, 1862)
One scenario covering Champion Hill, part of the Vicksburg campaign (May 16, 1863)
One scenario covering Pickett's Mill, part of the Atlanta campaign (May 27, 1864)
Two scenarios covering Nashville (Dec 15, 1864)
So, no love for Stones River, Chickamauga, or Chattanooga. As for "the ability to play through a full campaign," while the rules are certainly capable of it, you'll find no help in that endeavor in this book.

Ok, with that said, this is an excellent resource for the actions covered. This book is worth owning if you have an interest in the Western Theater, regardless of whether or not you use the Across a Deadly Field rules. Each scenario is given a decent background, detailed order of battle, and a detailed map. I'd recommend this book to any Civil War gamer.

A great set of rules from John Hill!

I'm a huge Johnny Reb fan and these new rules from John Hill are the next evolution of JR. They play very intuitively and allow the gamer to play big, army level battles in a reasonable amount of time. One nice aspect of ADF is that even though the focus is on the "big battles", players can still play with, and focus on the actions of individual regiments.
The rules work well with any scale figures and have enough basing options to accommodate just about any basing scheme. I play with 10mm two stand units, 15mm three and four stand units, and two stand 25mm units.

The rules are historically accurate in my opinion, and very learnable. There are also many optional rules to allow the gamer to suit the game to their taste.
John has a couple of scenario books coming out soon for ADF too.
This is is a quality book from Osprey full of great pairings and miniatures pictures. It will be a great addition to the collection of any ACW miniature gamer! Cory R

Wonderful!

I have so many things to say about this I would like to use bullet points. I will cover what it has done for me, add some comments on the book itself and then make a couple of final notes.

Notes about what using Egoscue's method has done in my life:

* I have been using this and Pete Egoscue's other book "Pain Free" for a year and a half now. I am a female in my early 30's. I have sent a copy of this book to all the women close to me because it has helped me so much.

* I have a very severe case of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) and had constant pain throughout my body. I tested only two pressure points short for Fybromyalgia. As I became more ill my overall physical health declined severely. I couldn't even stand to do dishes for long, let alone cook or exercise or many of the things I am now become able to do.

* Within the first two weeks of doing the e-cises (only about 30 min a day) I stopped getting night sweats and the pervasive, all-over body pain went away. I still had a lot of joint pain and realized I was very badly out of alignment (when standing comfortably my right foot was turned out and further forward than my left by 6 inches - no kidding!).

* Over the last year and a half I have become less chemically sensitive, I don't get dizzy as often, my stamina has improved (I had gotten so I couldn't handle even handle flying on an airplane). For years I had a yellow tint to my skin (my doctor thought it was normal), but this has now disappeared, my liver enzymes were mildly elevated, but are now normal.

* I haven't had ANY pain from my herniated disk for over a year now!

* You don't have to be in pain to benefit. For years I tried to do handstands, but never go good at it. Presently I can do them with complete ease. I never realized that it wasn't my arm strength that was lacking (I had really strong arms), but rather, shoulder strength and alignment.

* I've had a limp ever since I was 11 when I cut the tendon to my large toe. I can now proudly say that the limp is completely gone. :) I also don't lose my balance all the time when I walk like I used to.

* Almost best of all is that I had sleep maintenance insomnia, which has greatly improved. I used to wake on average once an hour every hour throughout the night. Now I wake perhaps once every three. This is continuing to improve.

* Most importantly, I had stopped being able to sweat years ago. I would simply overheat. After a year of doing e-cises I started sweating again!! Once I started sweating I found I can tolerate being around chemicals more (perfumes and such), I don't get as swollen, and I recovered from exposures faster.

Nothing else I tried really helped my MCS, but this has made all the difference in the world. I'm not sure I would have recovered to this point without it. The improvement in my quality of life has been worth every minute of it!

Notes about the book itself:

* This sort of thing is very difficult to teach from a book. I've found using "menus" from each of his books to be very useful.

* Some things you have to figure out for yourself. I started on my age group's restoration e-cises in this book and my knee pain got worse. That is when I figured out that Egoscue was really serious when he said that if you have pain in a specific joint that using the "Pain Free" book first to target it was best. I did the knee exercises in that book for about a couple months and then was able to return to the menus in this book without difficulty and found it much easier.

* I love the format of this book. It starts with infancy and how even babies and children can get inadequate movement. I found its detail in how we became "out of alignment" to be most useful and it really inspired me to get back into alignment.

* He also gives a restoration menu for each age group and a maintenance menu for when that one because really easy.

* For those who want to go further than the maintenance menu, he gives a strength menu and a strength menu with weights if you are interested in using them.

* He has a menu for people who are seriously ill and need "slow changes".

* He also includes menus for prepregnancy/1st trimester, second trimester menu, third trimester menu, and post pregnancy.

* The Supine Groin Stretch Does take a long time - but only at first. The first day it took me an hour each leg for the groin muscles to relax. The second day it was about 50 minutes each. The third day it took about a half an hour each leg. But within two weeks it only took a few minutes each leg and now, still, it only takes me about two minutes a leg.

* If you have a lot of problems in many joints or very severe joint pain I suggest starting with Egoscue's "Pain Free" book, but if you don't have many problems or don't have much pain then I would recommend this one.

A couple final notes:

The e-cises really must be done everyday to see the benefit. When I skip day, two or especially three I start getting pain back, not as bad as when I first started this, but I start losing ground. When I am consistent I see progress daily. My closest friends all use this and they keep coming back to me and saying how well it works to get rid of their pain and how much better they feel afterwards.

My husband is a professor in a medical school, not only does he use Egoscue's exercises from his "Pain Free" book, he recommends these two books to people regularly.

Time after time, Egoscue has saved me.

I first found Egoscue seven years ago when I was experiencing unrelenting pain in my ankle due to a car wreck that had crushed my heel. For ten years I'd lived with the pain -- until I started doing the Egoscue exercises. Within a week, the pain disappeared. Ten years of pain -- just up and disappeared. I was able to walk without lumbering, walk without wincing every step. As years progressed, I got sloppy and less commited to doing the exercices. As my body got more and more out of alignment, the ankle pain returned WITH excruciating hip pain. This pain was so bad that I couldn't get to the bathroom without lunging to the next piece of furniture, couldn't stand at the sink to grate a carrot. I was popping aspirin like they were m&m's. I went back to the book, did the hip menu and, within seventy-two hours the pain completely disappeared. Another couple of years passed, and I again got lazy and stopped doing the excercises. This time, it was the searing pain of sciatica that grounded me. This pain was so bad that I would scream out as I tried to pull myself out of the bed. This was evil pain that wouldn't go away. Lamenting to a friend (whom I had introduced to Egoscue!) about the pain I was in, I was surprised to hear that her husband had gone to the Egoscue clinic for the exact same sciatic pain. She shared his menu with me and -- I am almost embarrassed to say it -- the pain disappeared after just three days. And stayed away until I quit doing the exercises. (I am, if nothing else, an exceedingly slow learner.) Pete's program has brought me back from debilitating pain THREE separate times. I think I finally get it. The Egoscue method works when you work it. It has been a miracle cure for me three times. Yes, it takes a long time to do the menus. Yes, it's really boring to lie on the floor for that long. And yes, it's SO worth it to finally feel GOOD again. Anybody who complains that it's too much trouble or takes too long simply hasn't been in the kind of pain I've been in. But, when they are, this is a method that has never failed to fix what ails me.

Are you Kidding? Egoscue is a Genius!!!

Over 3 years ago I had constant shoulder, back, and hip pain. I had already invested in over a dozen books and had come to the conclusion that nothing was ever going to help me - chronic pain was a part of growing older. I also had a difficult time doing the Taijiquan (a martial art) form I was working on because my back was overly curved. On the advice of a friend, I got Egoscue's first book, Pain Free.
After doing the exercises (30 minutes each day) for a few months, wonder of wonder, my curved back relaxed and I was able to sink into the Taijiquan postures I'd been trying to achieve for ten years. But best of all - the pain disappeared. For the first time in years, I didn't wake up to daily pain in my joints!!!
Unfortunately, almost a year ago, I got into a car accident that is still causing me a great deal of pain in my neck and back. I had been doing those same Pain Free exercises from before, but they didn't seem to be doing much.
I decided to purchase this newer book anyway - since it was written specifically for women. I actually didn't think it would help much and prepared myself for disappointment.
Oh MY!! After just a few weeks, once again, I was amazed at the difference. The exercises in this book (and yes, they do take much longer than the simple Pain Free book) were so helpful that I was able to change from a narcotic pain reliever to a non-narcotic pain reliever. Believe me, for someone trying to function- that is a BIG difference.
Egoscue is a genius. I have seen many doctors, including so-called pain specialists, and the only thing that has significantly helped me so far is Egoscue exercises. I now do them every day, and can feel the difference in my neck, back, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, and feet.
Even better - this book explains in much more detail than the Pain Free book exactly what's going on in my muscles and body - so that I can really tell why the exercises are working (or not). Now that I can feel the difference, I can tell when to stop doing one phase and move on to the next.
I felt compelled to write this review because I noticed a few negative reviews. The only thing that I can postulate is that
1. The people writing were not committed to the exercises for long enough for them to work, or...
2. The people did not really have chronic pain to begin with and therefore no motivation, or....
3. The people have something personal against Peter Egoscue (I have never met him, so I wouldn't know).
All I can say is -- this book changed my life. I only wish I had read it BEFORE my accident - I suspect that I wouldn't have gotten so hurt had I been in better "functional" shape prior to getting rear-ended.
This book is about prevention, about taking control of your body and making it work the way it was designed to work. If you are a women in chronic pain - believe me - if you do these exercises, you will change your life for the better. Don't let others disuade you from doing the most that you can for yourself.

About the Author
Hiromi Goto was born in 1966 in Chiba-ken, Japan, and immigrated to Canada at the age of three with her family. After a short time on the West Coast, they moved to southern Alberta. Hiromi graduated with a BA degree in English from the University of Calgary in 1989. She lives in Calgary.

Very entertaining

I began this book thinking it would be some artsy-fartsy book, but was delighted when this highly skilled author spun a highly entertaining story of three women, a grandmother from Japan, her daughter, and granddaughter. After twenty years of sitting in her rocker mumbling to herself, obochan suddenly disappears in a snow storm. Of course you imagine the worst, but this spunky woman surprises us with her spirit and outrageousness as she reclaims her life, and as her daughter and granddaughter reclaim their lost culture.

Mukashi mukashi oomukashi...

This is a story about three generations of Japanese-Canadian "Tonkatsu" family. Grandma Naoe, daughter Keiko, and granddaughter Muriel-Murasaki.
Obaachan(grandma) tells old Japanese folk tales to mago-daughter Murasaki, who doesn't understand her grandma's Japanese well, but gets it somehow, while Keiko refuses all the Japanese things. So they have some trouble with their communication each other. But after Naoe had set out on a sudden journey, they, each of them, gradually found their identity through the (especially Japanese) food. Some Japanese immitation sounds (such as sara-sara, zuru-zuru) are effectively used.

I very much approve of Goto-san's belief; There are people who say that eating is only a superficial means of understanding of a different culture.....You haven't learned anything at all. I say that's a lie. What can be more basic than food itself ?
And of course, "Tonkatsu (guess what !)" is yummy. :-))

About the Author
Malka Marom began her career as a folksinger, in the popular duo Malka & Joso, who were the first to bring world music to Canada. As a soloist, Marom has performed on stage, TV, and radio around the world. She is also known and respected as a radio broadcaster and documentary maker and is the author of the bestselling novel Sulha. Marom lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Many wonderful things have already been said about this book, so I won't be repetitive. The one word that makes me crazy that I see and hear used again and again, even in reviews here, to describe Joni's attitude toward herself and her work, is "arrogant." An artist, a master of many mediums, and of her stature is rarely found in any age, and yet Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen are repeatedly described as "poets"; Joni is never, to my knowledge, put in their class. Her work is always qualified by her gender. This is grossly unfair, and in interviews one can tell how much this irritates her. And it should! She tells of being "short-sheeted" at New York venues by envious male performers such as Dylan...her guitar destroyed prior to a performance because the boys were pissed that she played better than they, and she was only a girl. I laud Joni for taking her praise into her own hands, and for saying she really had no peer...neither Cohen or Dylan had the vocal chops that she did, or painted with words as skillfully as she did, or used such complex harmonies, or made so many gutsy changes in her creative direction. I think many almost-greats copied her and resented her at the same time: she refused to be held down or put in a corner or pigeonhole. How frustrating that must have been! My deal is, those whose work goes beyond praise need to be glorified, regardless of gender. Joni continues to be short-sheeted, and she is irritated and goading into telling the truth, setting the record straight. Those who love her work, all of it, are stunned by her musical and poetical honesty...why would she make dishonest boasts? It seems to me ironic beyond words that she is painted with such a brush, and to think she is arrogant is to totally miss the point of the gender issues involved and her compulsion to right a true wrong, not one she perceives. Can we drop the word "arrogant" from the Joni Mitchell lexicon, once and for all? I think it's about time.

Wonderful!

I am not a professional reviewer. I am a huge Joni Mitchell fan. Anyone who loves her art and music will enjoy this "tapping of her mind". Here, Joni is the painting and Malka Marom is the frame. Malka Marom skillfully converses with Joni giving you a closeness that only a friend can share. It is revealing, touching, thoughtful and real. It was like spending a day with an old friend - picking up just where we left off. Loving Joni's work is truly like making a friend for life - this book only deepens the relationship. I highly recommend it!

I love reading about exceptional people, how they think, create, personal histories, experiences, views, ect. And have been drawn to Joni's words, thoughts, staggering creativity, raw insight and clarity. So, this book is gold to me. Very very interesting. What an education, what a perfectly imperfect, brilliant, mind blowing human being! I was/am seriously struck & inspired by who she is as a person & artist. Fueled by desire to create. She has made life so much more richer for me/us.
This book is a keeper, I know I will read it again, and will refer back to it. Lovely photos & art.

PreSchool-Grade 2 Thomas refuses to wear his new brown snowsuit: "If you think I am going to wear that ugly snowsuit you are crazy!" He reinforces this statement with a resounding "NNNNNO" when his mother insists he don the suit. His mother jumps up and down, and they have an enormous fight. This behavior is repeated with Thomas' teacher and the school principal. In the process of a fight, Thomas and his teacher end up in their underwear. Thomas never suffers any ill-consequences for his rude behavior; he looks on with a smirk as his mother, teacher and principal are made to look foolish. In the end the principal retires to Arizona "where nobody ever wears a snowsuit." Thomas comes off as a manipulating, rude little brat. Audiences may chuckle over the cartoon-like illustrations; they are bright and colorful, and do fit the story. However, this is one Canadian import that should be left north of the border. Thomas' Snowsuit

As a Minnesota preschool teacher, I can't tell you how realistic this book is! (in an exagerated way, of course). This book has become a classroom favorite every winter when snowsuits are a way of life. Robert Munsch really knows children and the way they think. Thomas, his teacher, and even the principal have an excitable time getting Thomas into his brown snowsuit to play outdoors. A word of warning: underwear causes fits of hysterical laughter to any 3 to 5 year old!

Complete shocker!!

I ordered this book along with a few others and was completely shocked when I opened the box! The book is only 2 inches x 2inches in size - It looks as though it belongs to a toy doll - Extremely dissappointed - I intended to use this with my student during speech therapy sessions but I am doubtful that it will be useful now
I have ordered books from Amazon in the past and never stopped to look at the size of it before ordering but guess from now I will have to!

Lighten up and enjoy the ride!

I first heard this story in my education class while we were learning how to do shared reading in the classroom. Being read to in the child's perspective was interesting enough, but to have this book read was a blast. The pictures are humorous and the story makes children and adults laugh. Everyone knows that parents make you do something you can't stand. We have all seen "The Christmas Story" with the red-rider bb gun and the infamous overly wrapped for winter younger brother. This book reminds me of that hilarious scene. Once the teacher and the principal get in the act it gets all crazy. In the end, just like you would expect a child to do, he jumps right into his snowsuit when it lets him do something he wants to do, play. This is a sweet story, a good read for children.

In seguito agli ottimi risultati didattici, da me ottenuti, con l’applicazione della scuola
violinistica russa, nell’insegnamento del violino all’interno delle scuole medie ad indirizzo musicale, ho pensato fosse cosa utile per lo sviluppo di tale specifico insegnamento, scrivere un libro di testo basato sul sistema russo.
Questo sistema utilizza nei primi anni di studio, melodie popolari russe (che io ho
sostituito con melodie di ogni genere, famose qui in Italia) e utilizza il proprio corpo come uno strumento, per ottenere il “bel suono”.
In particolare tutti i movimenti atti al suonare, dovranno essere preceduti da movimenti preparatori (nei cambi di corda, nei cambi d’arco e nei cambi di posizione), ciò per eliminare i movimenti a scatto e rendere il modo di suonare più armonioso.
Importante, anche, è saper comandare con il cervello solo i muscoli che in un determinato contesto è necessario utilizzare, rilassando gli altri muscoli, che nello stesso contesto, non servono.
In questro metodo, le melodie famose hanno un accompagnamento di 2° violino, o sono arrangiate in forma di duetto ed alcuni studietti possono essere accompagnati al pianoforte con gli accordi scritti.
Questo consentirà agli allievi, di fare musica d'insieme, con il maestro o con altri compagni, già dopo poche lezioni.
Inoltre, le numerose melodie famose che l'allievo troverà arrangiate in forma di duetto, nell'arco di tutto il metodo, renderanno lo studio più gratificante e piacevole.
Tra i brani più famosi contenuti nel metodo: Fra martino, Santa notte, Il lago dei cigni, Tristezza di Chopin,Te Deum, Dona nobis pacem, Tema dall'autunno di Vivaldi, Tema dalla Primavera di Vivaldi.

Sexy, entertaining, fun

There was a time when ships were the only form of transportation between the old world in Europe and the new colonies across the waves. In those days, the oceans were full of bold pirates, waiting to seize large war-ships and merchant vessels and rob them of the riches they carried. There was not a port or tavern where the sailors did not recount the tales of the notorious Captain Black Wade, the terror of the seven seas...

So begins Black Wade: The Wild Side of Love, a beautifully illustrated and surprisingly engaging book from Bruno Gmunder by Italian duo Franze and Andarle. Officially a "gay adult comic," to simply call it that does it a major injustice; this book is visually stunning, with a story that not only flows, but flows well- and somehow allows you to escape almost immediately into the story. Black Wade brilliantly combines rich graphics with a captivating tale- of pirates!

Of course the story is simple, as it should be. It's also superbly crafted, however, by someone with an excellent grasp of language, expressing much in so few words. Of course, most people won't be focusing on the words- and who can blame them when the images are this hot? Between the dark, mysterious and slightly hirsute Captain Black Wade, the young, strong, smooth blonde Lieutenant Wilkins, and the men of both the pirate ship and the British fleet, there's enough eye candy - and resulting sexual encounters - for a short series, yet somehow it's never gratuitous.

And while the story may be somewhat predictable and borrow from old legends - and stereotypes - it's also enthralling and highly erotic... with a surprising ability to arouse. The warmth and detail of the illustrations brings the images to life; you'll likely find yourself rooting for the captured young Lieutenant even as you're secretly eager for Captain Black Wade to take advantage of him. With kidnapping, pillaging, pirate attacks, and plenty of lustful encounters, this is a passionate, wild story... with a happy ending.

Black Wade deserves a spot in your bookshelf, where you can pull it out on a quiet Sunday afternoon and escape into a quick fantasy. You may want to make sure you're alone though...

Expensive, but so worth it!

This book popped up under one of Amazon's "recommended also" features. I hesitated to buy it since it seemed a little expensive. However, I found that it was well worth the price. "Black Wade" is a gay romance graphic novel - similar to hard yaoi in theme and tone. And I do mean HARD yaoi, this book contains very graphic sex scenes, including noncon at the beginning. A typical yaoi manga runs about $12.95 to as much as $15.95 for a trade paperback in black and white. This is not only a hardcover edition, it is also FULL COLOR throughout like standard graphic novels. So the higher price is actually reasonable. There is no dust jacket, but the cover image is printed right on the binding. It has 80 pages, but the pages are larger format so readers get about as much content as a manga, perhaps a tad bit less. Also, the production values are high quality. The paper is heavier stock than normal graphic novels, and very bright showcasing the brilliant coloring of the artwork.

Art is subjective, but I found the artwork here to be excellent, and extremely well done. Clean lines and good proportions on all characters and the text was carefully placed to retain clarity but not block any of the imagery. I found no typos, and the language fit with the period nature of the story. I enjoy yaoi, but sometimes the characters look a little feminine. Not so here, these are "manly men." Right down to having hair on their chests (and other areas ;-) Still, they were attractively drawn. It's a pirate story, so there's action outside the sex as well and the ending leaves room for more without cliffhanging.

I enjoyed the novel so much, I went looking for the publisher's site to see if there would be more from the authors. No news yet, but I really hope they do a sequel. Highly recommended to hard yaoi fans, and M/M fans looking for something new to try.

More swashbuckling goodness than you can shake a stick at.

I can understand exactly what Franze and Andärle mean when they say that their style is; nifty and thoroughly in the details. This precision makes the world of Black Wade incredibly rich and one that you will want to revisit often.

The opening is well scripted with a backstory that deftly gives you an understanding of Jack. A young man, engaged to the luscious Annabeth, but filled with forbidden desires for more masculine curves. Jack has great strength of character and integrity, but he is no match for the merciless pirate who captures him and subjects him to all manner of wicked, nasty goodness. Black Wade is a swarthy, likable rogue with much lustrous hair and beard. I'd like to give him pats. He also has rugby player thighs. These are the very best kind of thighs to have you understand! heh.

The art is incredibly beautiful. The tension and lust between Jack and Black Wade is palpable and so spectacularly hot. I think my favorite panels are of Jack when he is sleeping early on in the book and having some rather erotic and lickable dreams! I also liked the images of Wade lolling about in his room, ship, bath and bed. All of them! He is just lush. The whole book is so gorgeous and it is difficult to narrow it down to just one or two images. The emotion conveyed through the color is also a large part of what makes this such a memorable read and the moody, dark palate used in the picture of Wade on the bridge illustrates this point beautifully.

This is absolutely a must have and has to be one of my favorite reads I've purchased this year. It has everything, dashing heroes, star crossed lovers, bad guys, knee breeches, ships, rope, leather boots and more swashbuckling than you can shake a stick at. Clever, beautiful, utterly romantic and total 5 star plus read.

So, I liked it. Just a bit.
