Best prehosp pharm book out there

Dr. Guy is a phenomenal educator and his pharm book is hands-down the best one out there--not just for paramedics but for all critical care transport professionals. It's well-laid out, concise, topical and easy to use in both clinical practice and as a teaching reference. Dr. Guy understands what it's like to be out on the streets (what, you mean our patients *don't* read the textbook?) and his case studies reflect that practical applicability. And let's face it, pharm can be a little boring, but Dr. Guy's mix of humor and expertise makes it kinda fun. Our flight crews often listen to his podcasts on the way back to base as quick, effective reviews of patho and pharm. This book and its accompanying Podcasts should be standard curriculum in any paramedic program. I would give this book six stars if I could.

Must have for any medic

Dr. Guy offers his vast insight and knowledge on pharmacology to EMS providers on iTunes and now in paperback. His podcast, which are similiar to chapters in the book, are also excellent and I HIGHLY recommend them to any prehospital providers. The information he gives on medications most frequently used, routes and doses is up to date and easy to understand. Medication errors are becoming a common occurance and under stressful situations, even the most seasoned medic can make a critical error. Dr. Guy provides us with the upper hand in patient safety and advanced medication education.

As a book fanatic, this is my favorite paramedic book. Not only great pharmacology, but great scenarios for "real life" situations. You get to make the call, and read on and see if you were right. Cannot rate highly enough, GOOD INVESTMENT.

Fascinating and mind-expanding

I've just now finished reading this the first time through and plan to read it again because I enjoyed it so much. Deepak is one of my favorite writers because he makes highly complex topics and systems of thought much easier to understand. I have been fascinated and wondered what the essence of life--and consciousness--is for years, and this helps to explain that consciousness survives physical death. If you have any curiosity about life beyond this existence, I highly encourage you to read this book.

An interesting take on death and dying, and a comfort to read

After my beloved Mom-In-Law died, I became very curious about where *she* went. She had great faith in her Christian beliefs, and I wanted to know that she hadn't been disappointed.
Shortly after her funeral I bought this audiobook. I'm familiar - as many of us are - with Deepak Chopra's work, and he didn't disappoint me here.

I gave the book 4 stars out of 5, because I'm a fan of a good story line, and the one in the book is only for purposes of demonstration. 4 stars because it's a book that helped me consider where her "soul" is now, because of - or in spite of - my own Christian upbringing and beliefs.

Chopra is known for his insight into things spiritual, and for his ability to explain said things in language and homilies we can understand. Here, he gives us his "burden of proof" of life after death. Not an easy task, and one that asks the reader for an open mind and warm heart.

At the very least, I am now reasonably sure my Mom-in-Law and dear friend has gone to the place she believed she would go after death.

Excellent book from a spiritual and scientific perspective

If you've known me for any length of time, you probably know I am obsessed with the topic of life after death. It's probably the result of being told for the first 18 years of my life that this life really didn't matter except as the test for whether you go to heaven or hell. Whatever, the reason, I still have this fascination with peeking behind the veil and seeing what's on the other side. I don't know how many books I've read on near death experiences and life after death. But, of all the books I have read, I think Deepak Chopra's "Life After Death, the Burden of Proof" is probably my favorite.

The book doesn't try to prove life after death merely by talking about NDEs. It's really more about cosmology and the nature of reality than it is about trying to track the soul after we die. Chopra draws deeply from an ancient Indian tradition called "Vedanta". I found it fascinating that throughout the book, he relates recent scientific discoveries to ancient religious traditions. The book looks at at death and the universe completely opposite from the way Christianity and many religions view death and the way modern scientists view the material universe. Death is seen as a miracle, similar to the miracle of birth. I was taught that death entered the world through sin and is the enemy. Something to fear. The Devil and Death are the enemy and God rescues us. Chopra says death is a miracle that:

* Replaces time with timelessness
* Stretches the boundaries of space to infinity
* Reveals the source of life
* Brings a new way of knowing that lies beyond the five senses
* Reveals the underlying intelligence that organizes and sustains creation (what most of us would call God)

Rather than seeing the Universe as something that just "happened", the book sees the material world as having arisen from Consciousness. Science has been trying to figure out what consciousness is and how it has arisen from a Big Bang of inanimate material. That is once science figure out that it hasn't just always been here. Chopra's approach, and what he argues science is uncovering, is that the material world has actually arisen from Consciousness. It's not the "spiritual" world that is unreal, it's the material world that is the illusion. or the projection. The way he weaves scientific discovery with the ancient traditions of the Indian rishis is very interesting. It reminds me of an illustration I saw presented by a theologian many years ago. Scientists arrive at the top of the mountain to discover a theologian sitting there. The theologian looks up and says "What took you so long?" Religion has taught us the Universe wasn't always here. Religion has taught us that some Intelligence created the material world. Religion has taught us there is design and purpose for what we see. Religion has taught us that we are more than our bodies (our brains).

The afterlife begins to make sense when you take the approach that consciousness is not in the brain. But, the brain is more like a receiver of consciousness. This is a model being investigated by some neuroscientists. Science cannot tell us how the brain works. We can see it working, different parts lighting up as we think or dream. But, we are obviously more than just our brains. For example, while many people believe that our brains produce our thoughts, thoughts actually can change brain chemistry. Since drugs are somewhat effective in treating depression one could say changing one's brain chemistry can change one's thoughts. However, talk therapy works as well and can produce changes in brain chemistry. Meditation can produce changes in brain chemistry. It's definitely not a one way street. While depression can be caused by chemical imbalances, a depressing event can lead to those chemical imbalances. So, our thoughts are clearly not only produced by our brain chemistry. Something, outside of our brain, is the observer, the creator.

The book does touch on Near Death Experiences (NDEs) and OOBEs (Out Of Body Experiences). It also talks about different levels of reality from the physical all the way up to the ultimate level (called the Akashic field in this book). The heavens and hells experienced by people who have had NDEs are temporary stops along the way (as many who have had NDEs have reported). They are largely created by the mind and the expectation of the person dying. Of course, scientists have said this all along- they're purely subjective experiences and do not reflect reality. But, this brings us to the question as to what the nature of reality is. If you're in a dream and you can't wake up, that is reality to you. We call this reality because it's a shared experience. But, reality is whatever your senses tell you it is. None of us experiences reality directly (in this body anyway). How much do our minds create "reality"?

At the point of death, our ties to the physical world fall away and we begin to experience more directly the other two realms (the subtle world the the world of pure consciousness). Chopra talks about how we can begin to shift our focus on these realms of reality before we die.

In the second part of the book, Chopra talks about the burden of proof. He addresses the following five questions:

* Is Akasha real (the realm of pure consciousness, the Void from which all creation flows)?
* Does the mind extend beyond the brain?
* Is the universe aware?
* Does consciousness have a basis outside of time and space?
* Can our beliefs shape reality?

If we can answer all of these questions in the affirmative, it's not so hard to believe that we survive the death of our bodies (really the death of our brains since that is where the mind is said to reside). Chopra links the question about Akasha to what scientists are discovering about the ultimate nature of the universe. He gets into some pretty complex physics that I have to confess I don't really understand. But, what is interesting is that the word Akasha has an English equivalent- ether. Up until the late 1800s scientists believed there was no "void" in space but everything was transmitted through the ether. Physicists more recently have gone back to a model that says space is full of activity in the form of invisible fluctuations in the quantum field. Physicists have come up with a Zero Point Field which contains not just what we see in the universe but everything that could possibly exists. This "field of fields", this seething exchange of energy is what everything that exists pops into and out of existence. The Zero Point field has been calculated to contain 10 to the 40th power more energy than the visible universe. This sounds a lot like what religion has been telling us that the unseen is incredibly more powerful than the seen.

That last paragraph may have been over your head (it's over mine). Chopra goes on and gives some analogies that are very helpful. Basically what he is positing it that our physical world is projected from a nonmaterial source. The invisible world comes first. And, reality increases the closer one gets to the source. As we die, we do not blink out of existence. We move from the projected to the real.

The next chapters go on to address the other questions asked above. Chopra concludes with a poem by Rabgindranath Tagore. He only gives part of it. But, I've looked up the whole thing. Some of the words in this translation are slightly different than Chopra presented them. I like this one better. I've been reflecting on this for the last few days and it has brought me comfort. I fear death because it's a journey into the unknown. But, this poem relates death to birth.

I was not aware of the moment
when I first crossed the threshold of this life.

What was the power that made me open out into this vast mystery
like a bud in the forest at midnight!

When in the morning I looked upon the light
I felt in a moment that I was no stranger in this world,
that the inscrutable without name and form
had taken me in its arms in the form of my own mother.

Even so, in death the same unknown will appear as ever known to me.
And because I love this life,
I know I shall love death as well.

The child cries out
when from the right breast the mother takes it away,
in the very next moment to find in the left one its consolation.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, describes himself as a simple Buddhist monk. He is the spiritual leader of the Tibetan People and of Tibetan Buddhism. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and the US Congressional Gold Medal in 2007. Born in 1935 to a poor farming family in northeastern Tibet he was recognized at the age of two as the reincarnation of his predecessor, the 13th Dalai Lama. “Is joy a feeling that comes and surprises us, or is it a more dependable way of being?” I asked. “For the two of you, joy seems to be something much more enduring. Your spiritual practice hasn’t made you somber and serious. It’s made you more joyful. So how can people cultivate that sense of joy as a way of being, and not just a temporary feeling?”
 
The Archbishop and the Dalai Lama looked at each other and the Archbishop gestured to the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama squeezed the Archbishop’s hand and began. “Yes, it is true. Joy is something different from happiness. When I use the word happiness, in a sense I mean satisfaction. Sometimes we have a painful experience, but that experience, as you’ve said with birth, can bring great satisfaction and joyfulness.”
 
“Let me ask you,” the Archbishop jumped in. “You’ve been in exile fifty-what years?”
“Fifty-six.”
“Fifty-six years from a country that you love more than anything else. Why are you not morose?”
“Morose?” the Dalai Lama asked, not understanding the word. As Jinpa hurried to translate morose into Tibetan, the Archbishop clarified, “Sad.”
 
The Dalai Lama took the Archbishop’s hand in his, as if comforting him while reviewing these painful events. The Dalai Lama’s storied discovery as the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama meant
that at the age of two, he was swept away from his rural home in the Amdo province of eastern Tibet to the one-thousand-room Potala Palace in the capital city of Lhasa. There he was raised in opulent isolation as the future spiritual and political leader of Tibet and as a godlike incarnation of the Bodhisattva of Compassion. After the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1950, the Dalai Lama was thrust into politics. At the age of fifteen he found himself the ruler of six million people and facing an all-out and desperately unequal war. For nine years he tried to negotiate with Communist China for his people’s welfare, and sought political solutions as the country came to be annexed. In 1959, during an uprising that risked resulting in a massacre, the Dalai Lama decided, with a heavy heart, to go into exile. The odds of successfully escaping to India were frighteningly small, but to avoid a confrontation and a bloodbath, he left in the night dressed as a palace guard. He had to take off his recognizable glasses, and his blurred vision must have heightened his sense of fear and uncertainty as the escape party snuck by garrisons of the People’s Liberation Army. They endured sandstorms and snowstorms as they summited nineteen-thousand-foot mountain peaks during their three-week escape.
 
“One of my practices comes from an ancient Indian teacher,” the Dalai Lama began answering the Archbishop’s question. “He taught that when you experience some tragic situation, think about it. If there’s no way to overcome the tragedy, then there is no use worrying too much. So I practice that.” The Dalai Lama was referring to the eighth-century Buddhist master Shantideva, who wrote, “If something can be done about the situation, what need is there for dejection? And if nothing can be done about it, what use is there for being dejected?”
 
The Archbishop cackled, perhaps because it seemed almost too incredible that someone could stop worrying just because it was pointless.
 
“Yes, but I think people know it with their head.” He touched both index fingers to his scalp. “You know, that it doesn’t help worrying. But they still worry.”
 
 “Many of us have become refugees,” the Dalai Lama tried to explain, “and there are a lot of difficulties in my own country. When I look only at that,” he said, cupping his hands into a small circle, “then I worry.” He widened his hands, breaking the circle open. “But when I look at the world, there are a lot of problems, even within the People’s Republic of China. For example, the Hui Muslim community in China has a lot of problems and suffering. And then outside China, there are many more problems and more suffering. When we see these things, we realize that not only do we suffer, but so do many of our human brothers and sisters. So when we look at the same event from a wider perspective, we will reduce the worrying and our own suffering.”
 
I was struck by the simplicity and profundity of what the Dalai Lama was saying. This was far from “don’t worry, be happy,” as the popular Bobby McFerrin song says. This was not a denial of pain and suffering, but a shift in perspective—from oneself and toward others, from anguish to compassion—seeing that others are suffering as well. The remarkable thing about what the Dalai Lama was describing is that as we recognize others’ suffering and realize that we are not alone, our pain is lessened.
 
Often we hear about another’s tragedy, and it makes us feel better about our own situation. This is quite different from what the Dalai Lama was doing. He was not contrasting his situation with others, but uniting his situation with others, enlarging his identity and seeing that he and the Tibetan people were not alone in their suffering. This recognition that we are all connected—whether Tibetan Buddhists or Hui Muslims—is the birth of empathy and compassion.
 
I wondered how the Dalai Lama’s ability to shift his perspective might relate to the adage “Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional.” Was it truly possible to experience pain, whether the pain of an injury or an exile, without suffering? There is a Sutta, or teaching of the Buddha, called the Sallatha Sutta, that makes a similar distinction between our “feelings of pain” and “the suffering that comes as a result of our response” to the pain: “When touched with a feeling of pain, the uninstructed, ordinary person sorrows, grieves, and laments, beats his breast, becomes distraught. So he feels two pains, physical and mental. Just as if they were to shoot a man with an arrow and, right afterward, were to shoot him with another one, so that he feels the pain of two arrows.” It seems that the Dalai Lama was suggesting that by shifting our perspective to a broader, more compassionate one, we can avoid the worry and suffering that is the second arrow.
 
“Then another thing,” the Dalai Lama continued. “There are different aspects to any event. For example, we lost our own country and became refugees, but that same experience gave us new opportunities to see more things. For me personally, I had more opportunities to meet with different people, different spiritual practitioners, like you, and also scientists. This new opportunity arrived because I became a refugee. If I remained in the Potala in Lhasa, I would have stayed in what has often been described as a golden cage: the Lama, holy Dalai Lama.” He was now sitting up stiffly as he once had to when he was the cloistered spiritual head of the Forbidden Kingdom.
 
“So, personally, I prefer the last five decades of refugee life. It’s more useful, more opportunity to learn, to experience life. Therefore, if you look from one angle, you feel, oh how bad, how sad. But if you look from another angle at that same tragedy, that same event, you see that it gives me new opportunities. So, it’s wonderful. That’s the main reason that I’m not sad and morose. There’s a Tibetan saying: ‘Wherever you have friends that’s your country, and wherever you receive love, that’s your home.’”

Brilliant, delightful, and profoundly inspiring!

The Book of Joy lives up to its title and goes much further. It highlights the many ways in which we can all bring greater joy, fulfillment and purpose into our lives, and illuminates the nature of the interconnected relationship between painful emotions and deep happiness. The book not only reaffirms this truth with great clarity, but through the magic of Abrams’ skillful facilitation shows the many ways in which these two great spiritual leaders, both of whom are also great teachers of peace and reconciliation, embody the totality of what it means to be both ordinary and simultaneously outrageous, mischievous, and completely unpredictable!
An unexpected delight of this book is the frequency and ease with which these two men bring forth their playfulness, wit, wisdom, and laugh-out-loud humor, even when they are immersed in profoundly deep discourse.
What I found personally most rewarding was the teaching that ran through the book that had to do with the many ways in which it is possible to find joy even in the most difficult of times. Both of these men have endured great hardship and adversity both in their own lives and in the lives of millions of their countrymen, women and children, and yet their extraordinarily brilliant spirit shines brightly through every page of this amazing book. How do they do it? The Book of Joy truly fulfills its promise to answer that question.
I give this book five stars only because I can’t give it six!

An insight into the pillars of joy, from two insightful luminaries of peace

The Book of Joy delves into the concept and cultivation of joy in life. For those who have read other books by the Dali Lama, you know that he thinks very deeply about what brings suffering and joy to humanity, and how we can seek and find true joy. What I knew less about was Desmond Tut’s thoughts on the same matter. This book evolved from a five day conversation between the two of them moderated by Abrams, who brings insight into the discussion between the two. The books combines discussion of the lighter moments of their meeting, to the intese discussion about the base emotions of life, and how to cultivate the "eight pillars of joy" (perspective, humility, humor, acceptance, forgiveness, gratitude, compassion, and generosity).

This is not so much meant to be a book of faith, but more a book of humanity and its potential to love and find joy. The warmth of these deep thinkers, and their compassion, transcends the pages of the book, making it a joy to read and revel in their thoughts.

In all, an inspiring, and thoughtful read for any reader.

It May Change You Forever!

A quick read that offers much good medicine for our troubled world. Both the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu have risen beyond their respective religions to reach out to all humans regardless of their location. A lot of inspiration here. Read it once or twice and chew on what they say. It could lighten your load, put a smile on your face, and maybe change your life.

Through detailed examination of mythology, cosmology, ancient art and artefacts and her exegesis of ancient Sanskrit texts, Thadani constructs a tapestry of feminine kinship, genealogy and sexual or erotic bonding between women (sakhiyani) in ancient India. The author offers an historical perspective on the effect of colonization upon lesbian identities in India, showing how women were viewed by Western imperialists either as soft victims or as sexually dangerous, possessing an overgrown clitoris and in need of heterosexual domestication.
The second half of the book focuses on contemporary lesbian realities and issues, including lesbian marriages, suicide pacts, forging lesbian space, lesbian human rights, lesbophobia, sexual exile and the different construction of gender, family and possible kinship alliances.

An informative book on the history of lesbianism in India

Lesbianism in India is still socially unacceptable, it is seen as an illness from the West, a disease which has polluted the purity of Indian culture. Consequently it is denied any visible form within the fabric of modern Indian society. This has resulted in lesbians being forced to exist secretly, with no sense of identity.
Thadani has written a book to disprove the assumption that lesbianism is a western disease, and show instead that it is a deeply embedded phenomenon within Indian culture. In doing so she hopes lesbians in India will eventually be able to construct a conscious identity within their own culture, instead of having to frame themselves and be framed as exiles from `the west.'
Thadani sees the denial of lesbianism as the result of an overbearing male dominated social order. Consequently she digs deep into Indian mythology to uncover a culture which exalted the female form above that of the male. In doing so she draws attention to the fact that women dominated Indian society way before patriachal norms were established.
She then charts the change over from a matriachal to a patriachal society, observing how Indian mythology has been rewritten, promoting through rape and the act of penetration, the submissive role of women and the dominant role of men.
Thadani contends that this patriachal order has been continually propagated through the ages, particularly during the colonial era, when the Victorians accentuated to an even greater extent the role of the hetrosexual family unit and the submissive role women must play within that unit.
It is the hetrosexual family unit which is now seen as the norm in India, and lesbianism as a western construct, which is ironic considering the abundance of lesbianism within Indian culture, represented through a vast array of materials such as temples, iconography and sacred texts.
Thadani, in her effort to highlight the lesbian side of Indian culture, hopes to free Indian women from the straight jacket of the family unit. She wants lesbians to be free to assert a self-conscious identity within the boundaries of Indian society, which as Indian women they have every right to do.

Inaccessible

Denn's text is much shorter than most introductions to fluid mechanics, but he seems to have left out all of the material that would make the topic interesting and accessible to the novice. The topics are well-ordered and have a logical progression, but almost all of the explanatory matter is missing. It is extremely difficult to get a conceptual understanding of fluid dynamics by looking at page after page of variable manipulation. In addition, the index is so incomplete as to be useless; most of the terms one would look up are not listed, or point only to the page where it was cursorily defined.
That said, this book can be salvaged for a class by a professor who is skilled at conveying concepts (rather than just equations.) I also suspect this book would be useful as a reference for those who have already learned the fundamental material. However, I recommend that the novice look elsewhere for a satisfactory introduction to fluid mechanics.

Pedagogically logical; ordered progression of concepts

Denn's book is an excellent introductory text for chemical engineering fluid mechanics. The book starts off with the basics of dim-analysis and proceeds into macro and then micro problems. This is a very logical ordering and allows the student to see the subject from a broader perspective instead of getting bogged down in the systematics of the problems themselves. A careful reading is definitely needed to get the most out of the book, though. And the section on turbulence is a bit unclear. Overall, though, a good book to keep for many years to come as a chem eng.

Denn's book manages to address the key fluid mechanics topics of relevance to chemical engineering, such as microscopic balances, lubrication approx., dimensional analysis, & creeping flow. This textbook is used at leading institutions such as UC Berkeley, MIT, Princeton, & Cornell. Using BSL as a reference for fully worked out examples and problems, Denn's textbook covers essential material for graduate school and industrial research.
