Review

"I have tried many a collection of readings claiming to capture the essence of critical pedagogy and theory for students. It was not until I found The Critical Pedagogy Reader that I was satisfied. The editors have managed to not only trace the fine historical points and lineages of critical pedagogy, but have compiled a group of articles covering all the gender, class, language, access, race, ethnicity, existential, and classroom concerns that critical pedagogues must address every day. In this age of hyper control and accountability, The Critical Pedagogy Reader not only skillfully identifies and interrogates the oppressive and marginalizing tendencies of institutional education, but it also provides strategies for a future of hope."
--Douglas McKnight, Associate Professor of Curriculum Studies, The University of Alabama

"The editors pull together classics from the history of critical pedagogy, and freshen them up with insightful commentary and lists of questions for discussion. This is a collection of the best work in the field, and should introduce a new generation of students and teachers to the powerful messages of critical pedagogy scholarship."
--Jean Anyon, author of Radical Possibilities: Public Policy, Urban Education, and A New Social Movement

The Criticial Pedagogy Reader
By Logan
The book provides an extensive and and up-to-date view of the important issues in critical pedagogy. It can be an indispensable source for future teachers and professional in the field of education. The articles are thought-provoking and analytical. The book can arguably be a reference material for policy-makers and administrators. While it may be missing practical advise, it makes up for it by offering fresh outlook on how education can be transformed to be more representative and equal.

A dialogue on critical pedaogy
By Jennifer Y
This is a great compilation of essays in the field of critical pedagogy. The reader is divided into eight parts. The introduction and Part I lay out key terms and themes in critical pedagogy, while not essentializing the field. I appreciate how the reader includes critiques of the field in an honest way, stating that these critiques "prompt a deepening consciousness"--demonstrating a commitment to dialogue. The range of topics in the following parts demonstrates how critical pedagogy speaks to pressing issues in education today such as social class, race, sexuality, teacher education, and critical media literacy. The introduction to each part includes brief summaries of the essays (very helpful in getting a sense of what each essay is about as well as understanding what the essay brings to the reader) and questions for reflection and dialogue (a good tool for starting discussion in the classroom).

I use articles from this reader in a "diversity" course for undergraduate and graduate students in teacher education. The essays generate discussion on topics of diversity without oversimplifying or perpetuating stereotypes about students of color and other students who are dehumanized by schooling.

Finally, there is a list of "suggested readings for further study" at the end of each part. It makes the reader an excellent resource, not only for the essays that are included, but with a very thorough list of related research and scholarship.

The Annotated Alice: 150th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (150th Deluxe Anniversary Edition) (The Annotated Books), by Lewis Carroll

A richly illustrated and expanded collector’s edition of Martin Gardner’s The Annotated Alice, including Through the Looking-Glass, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

One summer afternoon in 1862, the Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson took a rowboat out on the Thames. With him were three young friends from the Liddell family―the sisters Lorina, Edith, and Alice. Dodgson often spun fairy tales on these boating trips to pass the time, and on this particular afternoon the story was particularly well received by Alice, who afterwards entreated him to write it down for her. Dodgson recalled the pivotal moment thusly: "In a desperate attempt to strike out some new line of fairy-lore, I had sent my heroine straight down a rabbit-hole, to begin with, without the least idea what was to happen afterwards."

The tale, initially titled Alice's Adventures Under Ground, became Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which Dodgson published in 1865 as Lewis Carroll. So began the journey, now in its 150th year, of one of the most beloved stories of all time.

The Annotated Alice: 150th Anniversary Deluxe Edition compiles over half a century of scholarship by leading Carrollian experts to reveal the history and full depth of the Alice books and their enigmatic creator. This volume brings together Martin Gardner’s legendary original 1960 publication, The Annotated Alice; his follow-ups, More Annotated Alice and the Definitive Edition; his continuing explication through the Knight Letter magazine; and masterly additions and updates edited by Mark Burstein, president emeritus of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America. In these pages Lewis Carroll's mathematical riddles and curious wordplay, ingeniously embedded throughout the Alice works, are delightfully decoded and presented in the margins, along with original correspondence, amusing anecdotal detours, and fanciful illustrations by Salvador Dalí, Beatrix Potter, Ralph Steadman, and a host of other famous artists.

Put simply, this anniversary edition of The Annotated Alice is the most comprehensive collection of Alice materials ever published in a single volume. May it serve as a beautiful and enduring tribute to the charming, utterly original "new line of fairy-lore" that Lewis Carroll first spun 150 years ago.

The deluxe anniversary edition of The Annotated Alice includes:

  • A rare, never-before-published portrait of Francis Jane Lutwidge, Lewis Carroll's mother
  • Over 100 new or updated annotations, collected since the publication of Martin Gardner's Definitive Edition of The Annotated Alice in 1999
  • More than 100 new illustrations, in vibrant color, by Salvador Dalí, Beatrix Potter, Ralph Steadman, and 42 other artists and illustrators, in addition to the original artwork by Sir John Tenniel
  • A preface by Mark Burstein, president emeritus of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America, and all of Gardner's introductions to other editions
  • A filmography of every Alice-related film by Carroll scholar David Schaefer
225 color and black-and-white illustrations

About the Author
Lewis Carroll is a pseudonym of the Rev. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who was born on January 27, 1832, and died on January 14, 1898. His most famous works are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland; its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There; and The Hunting of the Snark.

Martin Gardner (1914-2010) is regarded as one of the world's leading experts on Lewis Carroll and his work. The author of more than a hundred books, he wrote the "Mathematical Games" column for Scientific American for twenty-five years and has been hailed by Douglas Hofstadter as "one of the great intellects produced in this country in this century."

The many works of Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914) include many humorous and political cartoons for Punch and other periodicals of the time, but he is best known for his illustrations of the original editions of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Class.

A Carroll Festival of Footnotes
By AYJ
When I was a child, I pored over my mother’s handed-down copies of “Alice in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass”. I was delighted by the other worlds down the rabbit hole and on the other side of the mirror, enthralled by the Cheshire Cat’s magical grin, the live playing cards and chessmen, the further adventures of my old friend Humpty Dumpty, and the antics of the Mad Hatter and March Hare. At the same time I felt some of the frustration that a child feels while sitting in on grown-ups’ conversation – I got the gist of the story, but I somehow knew that there was a lot that I wasn’t getting, grownup humor that was going on over my head. Even later, when I re-read Alice as a grown-up, I knew I wasn’t getting the point of a lot of the satire.

In “The Annotated Alice” Martin Gardner solves that problem completely and charmingly, with affectionate and witty footnote explanations of Carrollian wit that are almost as much fun to read as the original text, especially if you are a trivia nerd like me. Are you curious about the inspiration for “How doth the little crocodile/ improve his shining tail”? Here is the complete text of Rev. Isaac Watts poem “How doth the little busy bee/ improve each shining hour.” Is it true that John Tenniel’s drawings of the Mad Hatter were meant to represent British Prime Minister Gladstone? Gardner lays that myth to rest. Other notes explain in-jokes – allusions to incidents and people in Oxford and the family of Alice Liddell that would be clearly understood by his target audience, the real Alice and her sisters.

If you first met “Alice” in your youth and would like to know her better, I recommend you snuggle up with “The Annotated Alice” as your bedside companion. You will find unsuspected sophistication in this old treasure, you will feel younger with every page, and your dreams will be haunted by nothing worse than the Jabberwock.

Yet Another Edition, but it's Worth it.
By Amazon Customer
I've been an Alice fan for years and have purchased every of the (many) editions of Annotated Alice. You would think that this one would have nothing new to offer after so many previous editions, but it really does.

There are many new illustrations included which are not often seen, and other little extras that make this 150th Anniversary Edition a real treat. Great for the Alice novice or advanced fan of the books. The annotations will open a whole new universe to readers.

Hefty and beautiful
By Vanessa
I don't always like annotated editions, but I bought this one because both stories were included and it retains all of the original illustrations like the ones I remember reading as a child. Having said that, I enjoyed the illustrations by other artists included for historical context. Some of them are quite stunning, in fact. The thing I hate about annotated editions is the way the annotations create visual "clutter." Yes, that is the case here as well. I really have to force my slightly OCD-like mind to ignore that and concentrate on the text of the story. However, as a history buff, I enjoy reading the annotations from a historical perspective. It's a big book, so if you enjoy a hefty hardcover, this is the one for you.

Mudbound, by Hillary Jordan

In Jordan's prize-winning debut, prejudice takes many forms, both subtle and brutal. It is 1946, and city-bred Laura McAllan is trying to raise her children on her husband's Mississippi Delta farm - a place she finds foreign and frightening. In the midst of the family's struggles, two young men return from the war to work the land. Jamie McAllan, Laura's brother-in-law, is everything her husband is not - charming, handsome, and haunted by his memories of combat. Ronsel Jackson, eldest son of the black sharecroppers who live on the McAllan farm, has come home with the shine of a war hero. But no matter his bravery in defense of his country, he is still considered less than a man in the Jim Crow South. It is the unlikely friendship of these brothers-in-arms that drives this powerful novel to its inexorable conclusion. The men and women of each family relate their versions of events and we are drawn into their lives as they become players in a tragedy on the grandest scale. As Kingsolver says of Hillary Jordan, "Her characters walked straight out of 1940s Mississippi and into the part of my brain where sympathy and anger and love reside, leaving my heart racing. They are with me still."

Amazon.com Review
Jordan won the 2006 Bellwether Prize for Mudbound, her first novel. The prize was founded by Barbara Kingsolver to reward books of conscience, social responsibility, and literary merit. In addition to meeting all of the above qualifications, Jordan has written a story filled with characters as real and compelling as anyone we know.

It is 1946 in the Mississippi Delta, where Memphis-bred Laura McAllan is struggling to adjust to farm life, rear her daughters with a modicum of manners and gentility, and be the wife her land-loving husband, Henry, wants her to be. It is an uphill battle every day. Things started badly when Henry's trusting nature resulted in the family being done out of a nice house in town, thus relegating them to a shack on their property. In addition, Henry's father, Pappy, a sour, mean-spirited devil of a man, moves in with them.

The real heart of the story, however, is the friendship between Jamie, Henry's too-charming brother, and Ronsel Jackson, son of sharecroppers who live on the McAllan farm. They have both returned from the war changed men: Jamie has developed a deep love for alcohol and has recurring nightmares; Ronsel, after fighting valiantly for his country and being seen as a man by the world outside the South, is now back to being just another black "boy."

Told in alternating chapters by Laura, Henry, Jamie, Ronsel, and his parents, Florence and Hap, the story unfolds with a chilling inevitability. Jordan's writing and perfect control of the material lift it from being another "ain't-it-awful" tale to a heart-rending story of deep, mindless prejudice and cruelty. This eminently readable and enjoyable story is a worthy recipient of Kingsolver's prize and others as well. --Valerie Ryan

From Publishers Weekly
Jordan's beautiful debut (winner of the 2006 Bellwether Prize for literature of social responsibility) carries echoes of As I Lay Dying, complete with shifts in narrative voice, a body needing burial, flood and more. In 1946, Laura McAllan, a college-educated Memphis schoolteacher, becomes a reluctant farmer's wife when her husband, Henry, buys a farm on the Mississippi Delta, a farm she aptly nicknames Mudbound. Laura has difficulty adjusting to life without electricity, indoor plumbing, readily accessible medical care for her two children and, worst of all, life with her live-in misogynous, racist, father-in-law. Her days become easier after Florence, the wife of Hap Jackson, one of their black tenants, becomes more important to Laura as companion than as hired help. Catastrophe is inevitable when two young WWII veterans, Henry's brother, Jamie, and the Jacksons' son, Ronsel, arrive, both battling nightmares from horrors they've seen, and both unable to bow to Mississippi rules after eye-opening years in Europe. Jordan convincingly inhabits each of her narrators, though some descriptive passages can be overly florid, and the denouement is a bit maudlin. But these are minor blemishes on a superbly rendered depiction of the fury and terror wrought by racism. (Mar.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Winner of Barbara Kingsolver’s Bellwether Prize (2006), which recognizes an unpublished manuscript promoting social responsibility, Jordan’s debut novel exposes the racism and sexism of the Jim Crow South. Most critics embraced this topic, even while recognizing its heavy-handedness; the Washington Post noted that “the book doesn’t challenge our prejudices so much as give us the easy satisfaction of feeling superior to these evil Southerners.” Reviewers disagreed somewhat on the complexity of character development, with a few complaining of unclear motives. They agreed, however, on the power of Jordan’s plain, earthy writing (reminiscent of Flannery O’Connor’s prose, to some) and the compelling plot. If it’s too early to say that “after just one book … here’s a voice that will echo for years to come,” as the San Antonio Express-News claims, Jordan is a new author worth watching.

A Bruise In America's History, Who's Colors Have Yet To Fade.
By K. Daniels
It's her 30th birthday, and Laura hear's her mother sobbing that night--Sobbing because she believes her daughter will always be a spinster. Yet Laura does find love, marry's and has two children.

It is just after WWII, mid 1940's, and a series of unexpected events leads Laura and her new family from city life, to a rural cotton farm on the Mississippi Delta. A tiny shack, with no electricity, no indoor plumbing, no running water, and cracks in the walls so big that any bug can crawl right through. When it rains, the bridge that leads to the small town is easily washed out, and she is isolated on this farm, she is Mudbound. To go from living (in relative) luxury, to this life is a difficult adjustment for Laura, a struggle the reader can relate to. The book is written first person, and alternately told through the eyes of it's different characters. All of them easy to keep track of because they are so well written, and so memorable.

It is a time when racism in the south was not only rampant, but encouraged. Laura and her family are not black, but the tenants on her farm, a family of sharecroppers are. And when their son returns from WWII, he has become accustomed to the European treatment of black people, their lack of racism. He is not so willing to bow his head, and say Yes Suh, to the white man any longer. This is an important story that tells of a time before the Civil Rights movement, a bruise in America's history who's colors have yet to fade. Well worth your time.

Rural Mississippi in the 1940's.....
By DeMi Reader
Mudbound is the story of a white farming family (Henry, Laura, Jamie and Pappy) and the black sharecropping tenants (Hap, Florence and Ronsel) on their land. It is told in a first person narrative from the perspective of all the characters except Pappy. I am glad he was not given a narrative. His character was hateful and despicable. I believe the author created him so that we would have someone to focus our anger as we struggled to sympathize with the other characters. The different perspectives demonstrated the old saying....that there are always two sides to every story. In this case there are 6 sides. I was also struck by the fact that people can live with one another for years, eat dinner together at the same table, work together and truly never hear one another.

There were several times when reading this novel was hard to do. As an African American woman and mother of a young adult male, reading about the harrowing times of my people and our sons was a strain. The climatic scene with Ronsel will stay with me for awhile.

I didn't favor one character over another. Each was written true to the time and their respective station in life with no real surprises to their character or actions....just like the story itself.

It was an interesting book to read but...
By Virginia Myers
I usually read to relax and draw the end to a busy day as I lay in bed waiting for my drowsiness to gain control of my mind; however, I also enjoy my reading better if the books have a point to make. I have to say that I was satisfied as I read this book (though the final chapter by Ronsel did not meet my expectations) but I would not recommend it to my friends.

There are five primary characters that we get to know in the book. Laura (the middle aged white wife of the owner of a small cotton farm in Mississippi during the 1940’s who would rather be living a less rural life), Henry (her hard working and set in his ways husband who is determined to succeed in making a good life for his family), Jamie (Henry’s younger brother who has is guilt ridden and suffering from PTSD over his part in WWII), Florence (the salt of the earth black mother who becomes a maid for Laura), and Ronsel (Florence’s son who also has just returned to Mississippi after serving in as a sergeant in Patton’s black tank battalion and is challenged to become a mere “boy” once more in the eyes of the white citizens of his Mississippi community). I felt as if I got inside the skin of each of these characters as I read their parts of the novel. So I would grade the author’s character development as well done.

The only new knowledge that I might have gained from the novel is an increased awareness of how a black man who had served in WWII felt when he returned to his home and realized that what I will call “white man’s justice” was still strong in the old south. I am not saying his military was free from such prejudice (far from it) but I believe he had hopes he would be somewhat cushioned from it. The other feelings and prejudices that were in the book were pretty much what I expected to read about.

The book flips back and forth from the view point of one character to another throughout. I believe this was a good way to allow us to picture first-hand the different perspectives of the same incident described in the book. I had no difficulty with this technique.

The ending bothered me because I wanted a more complete picture of how Ronsel coped with the future. Instead the author gave us a what-if picture that left me hanging.

So why would I not recommend it? I guess because overall it did not let me understand myself better or get a new depth of understanding of the different people that God created. A different final chapter by Ronsel may have changed this recommendation. I guess I just want more out of a book besides a good read before I recommend it

An all around great read for novice military history buffs
By Jake Hartson
An all around great read for novice military history buffs. I used this book for my military history class for Army ROTC. Not only is it clearly written and understandable, but the material is presented in such a way that allows you to connect with the politics of the time as well as the siginficant people that are highlighted by their actions. A great read that takes a dry subject and brings it to life.

Perfect for Anyone!
By Gina Briganti
My first exposure to The Real Vitamin & Mineral Book was the previous edition as a textbook in nutrition college.

It is one of only two books that I found to be invaluable enough from my school days to buy the new edition when it became available.

This edition is as clearly written and well researched as the previous editions, with the added bonus of updated information.

As a holistic health consultant I still think it is important to seek professional advice before you start making changes to your wellness plan, but this book will help you to understand what supplements truly can and cannot do.

Enjoy!

Excellent Reference, may be a bench mark
By Ashish Batra
The book in itself is 5 stars. The reason I give it 4 stars is due to the fact that the author has done a great job collecting the info and putting it well, but not made the effort in describing in great detail how to design each individuals nutrient intake.

Good points:

1. The author is herself a nutritionist and she backs all her claims with scientific claims, and she is very honest at times when there is not enough research in the field.

2. Very good read and quite interesting flow of text.

3. Ample Information especially on each vitamins.

Bad Points:

1. Can get boring sometimes, I agree that mentioning about a certain doctor saying a certain thing makes the text in book more reliable, but too much bla-bla gets boring for people not from the medical background.

2. Design your own Optimum nutrient intake is the weakest chapter and that is the one which should have been strongest. This is what the book is all about, the information on all the vitamins is widely available and is the fact that we all need to increase the vitamin intake.

Excellent supplement recommendations but not my supplement bible!
By Jodi-Hummingbird
The supplementation recommendations in this book are excellent and not based on outdated information as they are in some other books. The amounts of each vitamin and mineral recommended in this book are not needlessly low and they tally reasonably well with what the best authors of health books recommend.

The author recommends for the average reader:

Vitamin A: 5000 - 25 000 IU
B1: 100 - 500 mg
B2: 100 - 300mg (500 mg for some)
B3/niacin: 500 - 1000 mg
B5: 100 - 500 mg (900 mg pantethine in cardiovascular diseases, and even larger doses for Lupus upwards of 2 g)
B6: 25 - 300 mg (500 mg for some)
C: 5 - 10 g (for healthy people)
Folate: 1 - 5 mg (the higher amounts in cardiovascular disease)
Manganese: 15 - 30 mg
Chromium: 200 - 600 mcg
Selenium: 200 - 600 mcg
Zinc: 50 mg
Boron: 3 - 6 mg

(These figures are from my own messy handwritten notes and so some errors may possibly exist. Please do not take these figures for fact, do your own reading first! This is also not a complete list.)

I would disagree with the claim that this book is the definitive guide to supplements as I found the information in the books Dr. Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution: Nature's Answer to Drugs and also books by Abram Hoffer such as Orthomolecular Medicine For Everyone: Megavitamin Therapeutics for Families and Physicians to be vastly superior, and the same is true of books on supplementation and detoxification aimed more at those battling serious illness by the brilliant Dr Sherry Rogers and Dr Lawrence Wilson. But perhaps this is just down to personal preference.

I also disagreed with the author's recommendation of a low fat food pyramid, the high dose of calcium recommended, and the recommendation to eat low fat dairy foods (which are full of skim milk powder containing oxidised cholesterol and also possibly whey protein) instead of full fat ones.

(One other quibble: I wish that all the comments about 'CFS' in this book (and almost every book on diet and health, it must be said!) could have been omitted, as every diagnosis of 'CFS' is a misdiagnosis and talking about 'CFS' as if it has a distinct cause and reaction to treatment is unhelpful and potentially harmful to patients who need instead to be given correct diagnoses and treatments appropriate to whichever of any number of hundreds of different diseases they actually have. This book recommends EXERCISE for 'CFS' which is just so dangerous and potentially life destroying for some of the 'CFS' misdiagnosed group. See Dr Hyde's book Missed Diagnoses Myalgic Encephalomyelitis & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Second Edition for more information on this issue.)

The advice to minimise grains, eat two moderate protein serves daily, plus eat 6 cups of vegetables daily and two serves of fruit was very good. This book contains only basic information on diet and further reading on this topic is a good idea if you're very committed to health.

Those books listed previously are my supplement 'bibles' that I go back to again and again, while this book I am content to have just read once and to have taken a few pages of notes from. But overall this book does a great job in giving people a good guide in how much to take of each vitamin and mineral to maintain or improve health as well as what makes up a healthy diet, and so I do recommend it. It is far better than the vast majority of books available on this topic.

I bought this to study for the LARE Section 1. It's on the CLARB recommended reading list for that section. I'm very pleased. It is extremely well organized material. There is one chapter on international contracts that I haven't read, but other than that, this book answers EVERY question I got wrong on the practice tests. I went from failing practice tests to passing them. Nearly every chapter has information necessary to answer at least one question on the practice test and the information is presented in a manner makes creating flash cards very easy. I recommend that you take a practice test first so you know what will be important and then read the book. You'll find that the information in this book was referenced very often when creating test questions.

You get what you pay for
By Jordan Wilkinson
Be aware that this is the "Indian Edition". The book is very cheap construction and certainly did not appear brand new. The pages are extremely thin and not bound well. However, it appears to have the same information as the original, and at a fraction of the price.

The Zhivago Affair: The Kremlin, the CIA, and the Battle Over a Forbidden Book, by Peter Finn, Petra Couvée

The Zhivago Affair is the dramatic, never-before-told story—drawing on newly declassified files—of how a forbidden book became a secret CIA weapon in the ideological battle between East and West.

In May 1956, an Italian publishing scout went to a village outside Moscow to visit Russia’s greatest living poet, Boris Pasternak. He left carrying the manuscript of Pasternak’s only novel, suppressed by Soviet authorities. From there the life of this extraordinary book entered the realm of the spy novel. The CIA published a Russian-language edition of Doctor Zhivago and smuggled it into the Soviet Union. Copies were devoured in Moscow and Leningrad, sold on the black market, and passed from friend to friend. Pasternak’s funeral in 1960 was attended by thousands who defied their government to bid him farewell, and his example launched the great tradition of the Soviet writer-dissident. First to obtain CIA files providing proof of the agency’s involvement, Peter Finn and Petra Couvée take us back to a remarkable Cold War era when literature had the power to stir the world.

Chapter 1

Bullets cracked against the facade of the Pasternak family’s apartment building on Volkhonka Street in central Moscow, pierced the windows, and whistled into the plaster ceilings. The gunfire, which began with a few isolated skirmishes, escalated into all-out street fighting in the surrounding neighborhood, and drove the family into the back rooms of the spacious second-floor flat. That, too, seemed perilous when shrapnel from an artillery barrage struck the back of the building. Those few civilians who ventured out on Volkhonka crab-ran from hiding spot to hiding spot. One of the Pasternaks’ neighbors was shot and killed when he crossed in front of one of his windows.

On October 25, 1917, in a largely bloodless coup, the Bolsheviks seized power in Petrograd, the Russian capital, which had been called Saint Petersburg until World War I broke out and a Germanic name became intolerable. Other major centers did not fall so easily as militants loyal to the revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin battled the Provisional Government that had been in power since March. There was more than a week of fighting in Moscow, the country’s commercial center and second city, and the Pasternaks found themselves in the middle of it. The family’s apartment building was on a street that crested a hill. The flat’s nine street-side windows offered a panoramic view of the Moscow River and the monumental golden dome of Christ the Savior Cathedral. The Kremlin was just a few hundred meters to the northeast along the bend of the river. Pasternak, who rented a room in the Arbat neighborhood, had happened over to his parents’ place on the day the fighting began and found himself stuck there, eventually huddling with his parents and younger, twenty-four-year-old brother, Alexander, in the downstairs apartment of a neighbor. The telephone and lights were out, and water only occasionally, and then briefly, trickled out of the taps. Boris’s two sisters—Josephine and Lydia—were caught in similarly miserable conditions at the nearby home of their cousin. They had gone out for a stroll on an unseasonably mild evening when, suddenly, armored cars began to careen through streets that quickly emptied. The sisters had just made it to the shelter of their cousin’s home when a man across the street was felled by a shot. For days, the constant crackle of machine-gun fire and the thud of exploding shells were punctuated by “the scream of wheeling swifts and swallows.” And then as quickly as it started “the air drained clear, and a terrifying silence fell.” Moscow had fallen to the Soviets.

Russia’s year of revolution had begun the previous February when women protesting bread shortages in Petrograd were joined by tens of thousands of striking workers and the national war weariness swelled into a sea of demonstrators against the exhausted autocracy. Two million Russians would die in the carnage at the Eastern Front and another 1.5 million civilians died from disease and military action. The economy of the vast, backward Russian empire was collapsing. When troops loyal to the czar fired on the crowds, killing hundreds, the capital was in open revolt. On March 3, having been abandoned by the army, Nicholas II abdicated, and the three-hundred-year-old Romanov dynasty was at an end.

Pasternak, who had been assigned to a chemical factory in the Urals to support the war effort, hurried back to Moscow. He traveled part of the journey on a kibitka, a covered wagon on runners, and warded off the cold with sheepskin coats and hay. Pasternak and his siblings welcomed the fall of the monarchy, the emergence a new Provisional Government, and, above all, the prospect of a constitutional political order. Subjects became citizens, and they reveled in the transformation. “Just imagine when an ocean of blood and filth begins to give out light,” Pasternak told one friend. His sister Josephine described him as “overwhelmed” and “intoxicated” by the charisma of Alexander Kerensky, a leading political figure, and his effect on a crowd outside the Bolshoi Theatre that spring. The Provisional Government abolished censorship and introduced freedom of assembly.

Pasternak would later channel the sense of euphoria into his novel. The hero of Doctor Zhivago was spellbound by the public discourse, which was brilliantly alive, almost magical. “I watched a meeting last night. An astounding spectacle,” said Yuri Zhivago, in a passage where the character describes the first months after the fall of the czar. “Mother Russia has begun to move, she won’t stay put, she walks and never tires of walking, she talks and can’t talk enough. And it’s not as if only people are talking. Stars and trees come together and converse, night flowers philosophize, and stone buildings hold meetings. Something gospel-like, isn’t it? As in the time of the apostles. Remember, in Paul? ‘Speak in tongues and prophesy. Pray for the gift of interpretation.’ ”

It seemed to Zhivago that “the roof over the whole of Russia has been torn off.” The political ferment also enfeebled the Provisional Government, which was unable to establish its writ. It was overwhelmed above all by the widely hated decision to keep fighting in the world war. The Bolsheviks, earning popular support with the promise of “Bread, Peace and Land,” and driven by Lenin’s calculation that power was for the taking, launched their insurrection and a second revolution in October. “What magnificent surgery,” Pasternak wrote in Doctor Zhivago. “To take and at one stroke artistically cut out the old, stinking sores!”

The Bolsheviks, in their constitution, promised Utopia—“the abolition of all exploitation of man by man, the complete elimination of the division of society into classes, the ruthless suppression of the exploiters, the establishment of a socialist organization of society, and the victory of socialism in all countries.”

Yuri Zhivago quickly is disillusioned by the convulsions of the new order: “First, the ideas of general improvement, as they’ve been understood since October, don’t set me on fire. Second, it’s all still so far from realization, while the mere talk about it has been paid for with such seas of blood that I don’t think the ends justify the means. Third, and this is the main thing, when I hear about the remaking of life, I lose control of myself and fall into despair.”

The word remaking was the same one Stalin used when toasting his writers and demanding engineers of the soul. Zhivago tells his interlocutor, a guerrilla commander: “I grant you’re all bright lights and liberators of Russia, that without you she would perish, drowned in poverty and ignorance, and nevertheless I can’t be bothered with you, and I spit on you, I don’t like you, and you can all go to the devil.”

These are the judgments of a much older Pasternak, writing more than three decades after the revolution and looking back in sorrow and disgust. At the time, when Pasternak was twenty-seven, he was a man in love, writing poetry, and swept along in the “greatness of the moment.”

A Look Into The Doctor's Black Bag
By Alan L. Chase
I have been under the care of Dr. Yuri Zhivago since the eponymous film by David Lean hit the movie theaters in 1965. The film changed my life in more ways than one. One one level, it introduced me to the complexities of life in Russia and sparked a fascination with that part of the world that still flames to this day. It triggered my desire to dive deeply into the sea of great Russian novels, short stories, poems and plays that. When Pasternak's novel was available to me in English translation, I consumed it. I soon realized that as good as the movie portrayal had been of Dr. Zhivago's life, loves and art, the novel that shook the USSR was richer and broader in its themes and artistry.

Little did I appreciate the cost to Boris Pasternak of writing this work of art that won him the Nobel Prize for Literature and also won him the scorn of his government and many of his colleagues - at least on the surface and in official pronouncements. This book, "The Zhivago Affair," sheds valuable light on the dark intrigues that took place in Russia, Italy, U.S., The Netherlands and Sweden in getting this book into the hands of readers around the world.

Using broad-based research, author Peter Finn reveals the role of the CIA in pushing for publication, and the role of the Kremlin in trying to squelch Pasternak and his treasonous novel. There is a dense cast of players - fellow writers, publishers, government functionaries, family members and clandestine operatives. There is also a fascinating examination of the widely divergent views of artistic freedom and propaganda - as seen from both sides of the Iron Curtain.

The book is as well written as it is meticulously researched. I am grateful for the role that this book plays in drawing aside the curtain and revealing how one of the great works of literature of the 20th century came to see the light of day.

Slow, but deep investigation of a literary Cold War conflict
By Patrick L. Randall
“Doctor Zhivago” is a beloved literary novel by Russian (he was writing long before the Soviet Union came into existence) poet, Boris Pasternak. The author’s tale of life and struggle during, and after, the 1917 October Revolution went on to win the Nobel Prize (which Pasternak was forced to decline), to be made in an immensely popular film, was simply too independent in its thinking for the thought police within the Soviet Union.

The book “The Zhivago Affair”, while slowly paced, tells the story of how Pasternak was inspired to write it, how it impacted those around him and how enraged the Soviet Union became by this novel, which led to horrible treatment of a man who was one his country’s literary giants. “The Zhivago Affair” chronicles how the CIA saw the propaganda potential in such a high profile work that did not paint the 1917 Revolution with rose-colored glasses.

With a depth that is surprising for such a short book, “The Zhivago Affair”, effectively demonstrates how 600 pages of literature became one of the bigger battlegrounds of the Cold War.

Not the book it claims to be
By C. Peterson
Boris Pasternak was a famous and beloved Russian poet until he wrote Dr. Zhivago. Then he became infamous and reviled as an enemy of the Soviet Union. That sums up over 90% of this book. The CIA's successful scheme to publish the book in Russian and smuggle it into the USSR constitutes about 5%. It's a decent book on it's own merits, just not the one advertised.

The first few chapters describe Pasternak's upbringing and his poetry, for which he was famous in Russia. He gave very popular readings, and was nominated for a Nobel Prize starting in the late 1940s. The book then covers the years he spent writing Dr. Zhivago. Although married, he began a love affair which continued for the rest of his life, and this woman became a model for Lara in the novel. He apparently both expected the Soviet government to refuse to publish the book and was bewildered by its decision. Much of the rest of the book concerns the somewhat ineffective Kremlin efforts to suppress the novel and to repudiate Pasternak. His lover was imprisoned on account of his work, twice, he had to renounce his Nobel Prize, and he lost his livelihood as a writer. Yet the authorities chose not to deport him, or send him to prison. I was surprised at how much access he had to Western Europeans and Americans, and at how often he offered to placate the bureaucrats but then managed to infuriate them in the process.

The authors have done commendable research. Their portrait of Pasternak is surprisingly unflattering. Regardless of his literary standing, he seems to have been self-absorbed, over-wrought, unfaithful, incredibly naive, and reckless about the comfort and freedom of those around him. On the other hand, these attitudes allowed him to finish Zhivago, reject Soviet demands for rewrites, arrange for publication outside of Russia, and refuse to "confess" to his betrayal of the Communist state. I learned a fair amount, and lost some preconceptions; nonetheless, the book was less than expected. If you're looking for espionage, look elsewhere.

I borrowed this book from a public library loan.
