About the Author
Brian Curtis joined the art department at The University of Miami in 1985. He is a representational painter whose current series of psycho-mythological narratives explores those transitional, tentative moments that occur between times of purposeful activity. In an age that is often categorized as being in a perpetual state of crisis he seeks, by monumentalizing the ordinary, to reinforce the shared human core that is embedded in everyday experience.

Brian completed a five-year project of writing, illustrating, and designing an introductory perceptual drawing text, Drawing from Observation, which McGraw-Hill published in 2002. This book contains over two hundred drawings from Miami students. Brian spent 2001 in his studio preparing for a solo exhibition of his narrative paintings, charcoal drawings, and digitally manipulated images installed at the Lowe Art Museum. In February of 2002 Brian presented a paper at the 90th Annual College Art Association conference in Philadelphia. His paper, titled "Preserving the Post-Medieval Mindset" was part of a session on Perceptual Drawing in Higher Education.

In the spring of 1999 Brian was awarded the Dean's Excellence in Teaching award and was also a finalist for the Excellence in Teaching Award for the University of Miami for both 1999 and 2000.

Brian is the head of Miami's drawing program and works with students in painting and printmaking programs.

Best drawing instruction book

After owning more than 50 art books in drawing alone, I found this book at a white elephant sale and picked it up for $3.00 (2002 edition). After thumbing through the book, I immediately knew that this is a BASIC DRAWING BIBLE. To this day, I still go through and practice drawing using this book. As a reference, if I'm stuck drawing something, going back and practicing the relevant exercises always helped.

I have since sold the 30+ drawing books that didn't teach me anything on drawing and have kept this one, dog-eared and thoroughly used. Once you've learned this book thoroughly, drawing and constructing the human figure and animals become so much easier. I do a lot of life drawings and drawings in general, as that is the important skill even in video games.

This updated edition has a new chapter on composition - can't wait to get my new book!

Best Drawing Book Ever

This is the most important book in my collection. If you want to be a professional artist this book is the first step. This book improved my drawing style by the end of the first chapter. It teaches the most basic to highly advanced skills, from training your eye, making a good composition and perspective. If you only buy one drawing book ever, this is the one to buy.

The Very Best

Update 07/18/2016: This "FE Review Manual" was for the old-style, 8-hour-long, pencil-and-paper Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Visit the NCEES website (search: NCEES FE) for an explanation of the new, shorter, computer-based exam. While there: (1) make a copy of the exam specification for your FE exam; (2) watch the video on how to use the NCEES Reference Manual; and (3) download a copy of the NCEES Reference Manual. Instead of using the “FE Review Manual,” you should study from a review manual that has been updated for the new, discipline-specific computer-based FE exam (FE Mechanical; FE Electrical and Computer; FE Civil; FE Chemical; FE Environmental; FE Industrial and Systems; and FE Other Disciplines). PPI and Kaplan have review manuals for the new FE exam (“FE Mechanical Review Manual”; “FE Electrical and Computer Review Manual”; “FE Civil Review Manual”; and “FE Chemical Review Manual). With these up-to-date review manuals, you don’t need the "FE Review Manual" or the old discipline-specific review manuals (which were for the afternoon section of the old exam). You could conceivably prepare for the new FE exam using a copy of the old “FE Review Manual” and the exam specification for your exam to guide your studies (you can find the exam specification on the NCEES website).

Update 03/20/14: The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is now administered as a computer-based exam. Check out the NCEES website and YouTube channel (NCEES Media) for details. The website also provides a practice exam. While the old 180-question exam was 8 hours in duration, the new 110-question (multiple-choice) exam has been shortened to 5 hours and 20 minutes. The total appointment time is 6 hours, which includes time for orientation and a break. A simulated TI-30XS onscreen calculator is available for examinees during the exam. The FE is offered in seven disciplines: FE Chemical; FE Civil; FE Electrical and Computer; FE Environmental; FE Industrial; FE Mechanical; and FE Other Disciplines. Most FE review materials have not caught up with the new exam. Go to the NCEES website (ncees dot org slash exams slash fe-exam) to find the "exam specifications" for your own discipline-specific exam. Create a study plan for yourself based on the topics for your discipline and number of questions in each topic. You should also take the practice exams on the NCEES website, since those should align most closely with the up-to-date exam. Also, download the digital copy of the reference manual (PDF file) from the NCEES website and get used to using it on a computer (watch the how-to video).

Original Review (applicable to the old-style FE exam):

In short, the Michael R. Lindeburg books are the very best for preparing for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. If you are going to take the FE exam, then buy this book (as well as the discipline-specific book) and spend at least three month studying and answering the sample problems. Study only topics that will be on your discipline-specific examination (see NCEES website). Also, take at least two practice exams (using the NCEES FE Supplied-Reference Manual and an approved calculator). I have created an Amazon Listmania titled "Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam Prep."

If you aspire to become a working engineer, then you must obtain a professional engineer (PE) license for each state in which you work. PE candidates must achieve acceptable results on two exams: the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, which is usually taken in the senior year of college, and the discipline-specific Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Exam, which is typically taken after at least four years of work experience.

Passing this exam is one of the most important goals of your life. Take it seriously! Don't listen to those folks who tell you to take the exam without any preparation.

You will easily pass the FE exam if you spend three months (more or less) seriously preparing for it. You might need longer if you have been out of school for a number of years. Granted, the current exam is easier than it was in the past; but you should still prepare systematically and thoroughly. If you are still in college, then I recommend taking the exam during your senior year. For this case, I would recommend studying 10 to 20 hours per week during the entire summer, then cramming for four weeks right before the exam. For obvious reasons, you should try (if you can) to take a lighter course load during the semester in which the exam is given.

The types of questions on the exam are no mystery. If you are not ready on exam day, it is YOUR fault! To be successful, you need only six things: (1) Michael R. Lindeburg's FE review manual (FE Review Manual: Rapid Preparation for the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam); (2) Lindeburg's discipline-specific review book (e.g., mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical); (3) the NCEES FE Supplied-Reference Manual (FE Supplied-Reference Handbook, 8th edition, 2nd revision); (4) a freshman calculus book (knowing freshman calculus could make the difference between passing and failing); (5) an approved calculator (some calculators are not allowed); (6) FE sample examinations (FE/EIT Sample Examinations, 2nd Edition). You should also check out the NCEES website for up-to-date information about your selected discipline-specific examination, as well as practice exam(s) that should most closely match the current style and content.

Considering how much money you (or your parents) spent on your college education, the cost of the above is trivial. The Lindeburg books are the absolute best for FE exam prep. Trust me, you need both the FE Review Manual, the discipline specific book AND the Supplied-Reference Manual. Now is not the time to be frugal. Take this exam very seriously. Unless you get a PE license, you cannot (in most states) legally call yourself "engineer." Many jobs are open only to licensed PEs. Salaries are much higher for licensed PEs. This exam affects your whole life!

The exam is deliberately designed so the examinee is under extreme time pressure. Without preparation, you might be able to figure out the answers to the questions, but if it takes you five to ten minutes per question, instead of a roughly three minutes, then you are likely to fail the exam. You need to be so well prepared (by going through the Lindeburg books and practicing with the NCEES FE-Supplied Reference Manual) that you IMMEDIATELY recognize the problem type and you IMMEDIATELY know where to find (and how to use) the equation or constant or conversion factor in the reference book.

Check the website for your state's licensing board (or give them a call) to see which calculators are approved for use during the exam. You will not be allowed to take the exam with an unapproved calculator (for example, the HP 50g cannot be used in most states). Therefore, if need be, buy an approved calculator BEFORE starting your exam preparation. Perform all example problems with this calculator, as well as (at least two) FE practice exams. This is exam is so important, you might want to take two approved calculators into the exam (just in case one fails).

You should obtain and use a real copy of the NCEES FE Supplied-Reference Manual (FE Supplied-Reference Handbook, 8th edition, 2nd revision) throughout your entire exam preparation. You cannot take your own reference manual into the exam. You should use this reference manual during all of your exam preparation to become intimately familiar with the content and location of content. By test day, you should know immediately what is in the reference manual and how to find it quickly. A searchable, electronic copy of the handbook may be displayed on the monitor during your computer-based examination. You should go to the NCEES website and download a copy of the handbook so you get used to using it. While there, you should also watch the video explaining how to search the onscreen handbook during your computer-based exam. Make sure you are studying from the latest version of the handbook (i.e., make sure your copy matches the NCEES downloaded electronic version).

2014 FE exam changed to Discipline specific only

The FE 2014 exam is now disciple specific, that means there is no morning-after noon section at 4 hours each, its one 6 hour exam for your chosen discipline. This means you need to know the specific sections that are called out for each particular exam.

I am an EE, and this book only covers about 2/5-1/2(at best) of the material i need to study, so if you're looking to take this exam, this is only a supplemental review, you NEED another good electrical specific book. DO NOT buy the ones from PPI or Lindeburg, they are not updated for the 2014 exam, they are only questions and overall what you get for what you pay is awful.

Please be aware of the changes to the exam before buying any study material !!!

Thought Provoking

Teaching capitalism in today's world is like describing water to a fish; we are surrounded by it, can't live without it and are unaware of the alternatives. Most have never experienced the depression, many have forgotten the days when communism was actually a threat. We are blind to the absolutely crucial nature of how our world works. Although we watched the stock market plummet in 1987 and have all learned valuable lessons from the internet boom & bust, I picked up this book because I wanted to know a bit more about how the scholars view capitalism.

The book takes the reader through a history of capitalism while briefly summarizing everything you forgot from college economics. While the discussion of the development of capitalism focused on some interesting questions of historical interpretation, the strength of this work is the description and analysis of how the capitalistic system works differently in different countries.

The power of capitalism is set forth as its ability to adapt. Where other systems--feudalism, communism, socialism, etc--failed was that they could not adapt to change. The book was an excellent overview; it was current, easy to read, and contains a fine list of resources for further study.

A Biased Introduction

I was expecting an (at least) relatively impartial introduction, but the author could not put his allegiances aside to produce such a book.

A more accurate title would be 'Capitalism: A Very Short and Very Biased Introduction by a Sociologist'.

The usual academic/liberal/Marxist/socialist prejudices are on full display: Capitalism is bad; Marx was right; Soviet Union is the "last great empire"; USA is evil and corrupting, etc., etc. Opinions all of which the author is entitled to hold and promote - but I think they are inappropriate for an introduction to capitalism.

What is most bothersome to me is the choice of words used - where a neutral adjective or verb could be used a pejorative was used in its place. Workers are always "exploited" and are "coerced" into accepting capitalism, and so on. The affect being that these opinions are presented as fact - there is no hint that the author is stating his opinion - and the facts just happen to match standard Marxist/socialist dogma. This seems to be a constant undercurrent in the author's work (see the table of contents for his work on Labour Movements: 'The Employer-Counter *Attack* [against Labour Movements], 'Conservative *Attacks* on Collectivism'). The poor worker is constantly assailed by the greedy conservative capitalists - rage against the machine - working men unite - etc.

Then there are the blatant statements in the book's concluding pages:

"Scandals have been, however, a recurring feature of capitalism." Where should I start with this statement? Only capitalism? Not in the vaunted USSR? "Feature"? I can almost here him snickering with his comrades in the collective. Then, in the very next sentence: "The true capitalist is motivated by the amoral accumulation of money...". Of course; everybody knows this, so it is stated as fact. Fulcher should Just recommend Marx and Engels for further reading, as they do a better job delivering the message. Here, it sounds like hackneyed talking points.

Also, policies not approved by the author are always attached to a perpetrator: Thatcher, Reagan, Gorbachev, etc. The usual suspects. I'm curious why the "bad guys" get the name check - presumably so we know who to blame.

As alluded to in another review, aside from a back-handed compliment to Adam Smith, the identities of economists who are advocates of capitalism are not mentioned. I should say that Keynes is mentioned in somewhat neutral language. Of course, a two page uncritical primer on Marxism was necessary for an introduction to capitalism.

The "Further Reading" section continues the theme: no recommendations to read Smith, Ricardo, Friedman, Hayek, Samuelson, Krugman, Sowell...I suppose none of these economists/authors would buttress the author's storyline.

Almost forgot: I am sure the captions used for some of the photographs provided laughs for the crew responsible for this book:

Picture 13 shows four people reading stock market ticker tape - all looking happy (or at least unconcerned) - caption: "Traders watch the ticker tape as Wall Street crashes in 1929". Those amoral capitalists! Anyway, maybe it is a picture of actual traders and that it was taken in October of 1929, but there is no evidence that this what is actually depicted.

Picture 14 shows a bemused woman who doesn't seem to realize that she is being auctioned as the caption implies. Again, possibly correct, but the "List of Illustrations" provides no evidence that this is what is depicted.

Picture 15 is of the founders of Lastminute.com smiling, the caption describes them as "...looking pleased with themselves just before the company was floated..."

All very juvenile.

I do not recall anything in the book hinting that there are any positive or desirable aspects of the capitalist system. I am sure I would say the same thing about the VSIs on Racism or HIV/AIDS, but I don't think moral relativism is good editorial policy for a series of introductory books.

Somewhat ironically, along with this volume, I purchased Singer's VSI on Marx - I was hoping to be able read some contrast to what Marx was thinking. Oops. I guess not.

I might venture that the underlying issue is that authors/editors/contributors/publishers are all on the same bandwagon and see no need for impartiality - maybe that the book was produced at all fills this requirement in their opinion. When I purchase something published by Verso, Continuum or Von Mises Institute, I know I am likely to read something from a particular world view. I didn't think I would be able to say the same about Oxford University Press.

Good, quick read for a novice.

The book traces the origins of capitalism right from the trading days of East India Company. It discusses the presence of feudalism, its slow transformation into socialism, and finally its metamorphosis into capitalism. Once there, James does a great job of dissecting the facets of capitalism and the various forces that defines its nature - politics, business, labor unions, markets, currency, and others. He does this by comparing three distinct forms of capitalism - Swedish, British, and Japanese. Slowly the pieces of the puzzle start falling together.

In the last chapter, he discusses the various crises that have fallen upon/by capitalism. Per him, crisis is a by-product of this system and cannot be avoided. Thanks to the ever volatile consumer demand, never ending profit increasing, and the human nature in general. Economics 101 - Every person will act in order to maximize his/her profit.

This book is very lucidly written and I would suggest all to give this book a try and keep it in your book shelf, if possible. I cannot say that I am a master of this subject, but it has nevertheless built a foundation for me to develop my knowledge and make informed opinions about the events happening around me.

Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoi (Leo Tolstoy) (1828-1910), was a Russian author and moral philosopher. Tolstoy is regarded as one of the world’s greatest writers and is perhaps best known for his novels “War and Peace” and “Anna Karenina.”

Later in life, Tolstoy formulated a unique Christian philosophy based upon the teachings of Jesus, and rejected the institutional doctrine of the Church. These convictions made a profound impact on his life and are reflected in his writings after the year c.1880.

“My Religion” is a comprehensive exposition of this newfound faith, where Tolstoy lays out in detail every important aspect of his belief, and strives to explain the true meaning of Christ’s message, and where the Church has strayed from the Word of God.

Extremely relevant to today!

I actually have a different printing of this book, but it has seriously affected my world view, as it did for Mahatma Gandhi.

A small sampling of Tolstoy's insights to Christianity from this work, and how it is extremely relevant to modern society and current politics is the subject of the second half of one of my recent blog posts here: [...] As I mention in the post, the historical interpretations of scripture as presented by Tolstoy seem to match expert knowledge of the period, as the PhD Archeologist I met in Rome explained to me.

This book will change how you view and understand Christianity. Or, it did for me at least. But then again I was raised as a Right Winged, Home Schooled, Christian American Republican. Prepare to have much of that like completely shattered beyond hope of repair as Tolstoy analyzes the original meaning and understanding of many of Christs teachings, without the misrepresentations of the church. As a bonus: Gain valuable counter points for the so called biblical literalists you may run into from time to time. (Even more of which can be found elsewhere on my blog.)

Anyway: Tolstoy gets 5 stars from me! And presumably Gandhi also, given he modeled his work in large part on Tolstoy's explanation of Christs teachings from this volume. So if you don't believe me, take Gandhi's word for it!

what he puts forth in this excellent exposition of the sermon on the mount is both ...

While I don't agree with all of Tolstoy's conclusions (his rejection of the supernatural aspects of Christianity), what he puts forth in this excellent exposition of the sermon on the mount is both compatible with orthodox (traditional, not the denomination) Christianity, and utterly revolutionary. Anyone who reads this and is not convicted by Jesus's words to "resist not evil" simply does not have ears to hear. Tolstoy speaks with prophetic insight and truly lay's out what a kingdom lifestyle truly looks like. I would recommend this book to anyone who can take time to digest what is written within.
Between this and "The Kingdom of God is Within You" is what transformed me into a christian anarchist (really more along the lines of traditional anabaptist). I encountered these works while attending a charismatic bible college which pushed dominion theology very strongly, with Tolstoy's help, the contrast between dominion theology and the doctrine of Jesus became as clear as night and day. This books should be assigned to every student of theology if nothing more than a counter-voice to American evangelical conservatism.

Very poorly made

I really wish I wouldn't have wrote my name on the first page because I would have returned this. I feel this logbook is put together very poorly. It appears that they took a fixed wing logbook and change a select few columns to make it UAS. They left an instrument column which to me is unnecessary, maybe i'm crazy. I feel they could have added other needed sections and that's why I will not be using this book and will create my own on excel.

Quality logbook

Nice little logbook. I operate phantom 2 and I wanted to log my flight time for personal reasons. This is a great logbook that has enough room for ask the necessary information. You will feel better buying this instead of an expensive gimmick marketed to rich, blind drone owners.
