About the Author
Born in Havertown Pennsylvania, Tim Donaghy loved the game of basketball ever since he could remember. He received his love for the game from his father Gerry Donaghy, who had officiated at high school and collegiate level games for over thirty years. Since he lived so close to Philadelphia, he naturally became a 76ers fan. Some of his favorite players were Doug Collins and Mike Dunleavy. Donaghy attended Cardinal O'Hara High School in Springfield, Pennsylvania where he played competitively during his four years spent there. Following high school, Donaghy graduated from Villanova University with a liberal arts degree in 1989. Although Donaghy had a degree after his graduation, he became unsatisfied with the direction in which his career was headed. One night while sitting at the kitchen table with his parents, his mother suggested that he look into a career in the NBA. It was all the motivation that he needed, and began to pursue his new found dream job. Later as Tim Donaghy perfected his skills as a referee through training camps, he was noticed by the NBA supervisor of officials Darell Garretson. This eventually led to Tim Donaghys start in the CBA, the NBAs official minor league. He officiated for three years in the CBA. Before his fourth year Donaghy was called to officiate in the NBA. From 1994 to 2007 Tim Donaghy worked for the NBA, officiating in 772 regular-season games and 20 playoff games. Donaghy was a participant in the NBA's Read to Achieve program, for which he participated in an event at the Universal Charter school during the 2002 NBA Finals. His uniform number was 21

confirmed a lot of what I already suspected

As a huge fan of NBA basketball, many things in this book merely confirmed what I already knew. The officiating in the NBA is often biased and the outcome of the games is quite often controlled by the officials. They have favorite players and favorite coaches and don't mind helping them win if they can do it without blatantly making calls in their favor. Anybody that has followed the NBA saw the favoritism for the Miami Heat in 2012 and 2013. I think Tim Donaghy got caught up in something and didn't know how to get out. Once he was caught, he did the right thing by confessing to his part and learning a lesson from his mistakes. I wish, as he states at the end of the book, there was a way to control the bias by referees. While the gamblers, Vegas and organized crime love crooked referees, most fans just want a fairly called game. Nothing is more frustrating than to watch a team play so hard to have a win snatched from them by a referee. It happens way too much.

Great read for an NBA fan.

great book, read it cover to cover. I loved reading about the game they played where the first ref to call a foul in a game has to buy dinner. LOL. I loved the break down of notable refs, and their tendencies, who they loved, who they hated. As an NBA fan, this is a must read because we see these refs every game, and we've always made note of their reputations, but this makes it all make sense.

Confirmation of what I already believed

Donaghy comes straight out and tells readers how things really are inside the world of the NBA. There is no way to verify with 100% certainty everything that he says. Nor is their any way to prove that elements of the story were not left out. In spite of that, Donaghy spills enough inside information to expose the corruption that has affected the NBA for at least two decades now.

For years I had suspected that referees had screwed over the Kings in the 2002 Western Conference Finals against the Lakers. I also thought the same thing about the 2004 Mavericks-Heat Finals where the Mavericks got totally robbed by the referees. Lo and behold, here is a referee who knew exactly what was going and is confirming what many of us already thought. I like David Stern even less now than I did before which is saying a lot.

After reading this book I can barely even take the current playoffs seriously. One of the books more dubious characters, Joey Crawford, was at it again just a week ago in the Heat and Celtics series. After Kevin Garnett got called for a bogus shooting foul Doc Rivers calmly asked Crawford if "Kevin" was not allowed to stand his ground in the paint. Crawford responded by angrily throwing him out of the game! Seems like a pretty innocent question to most anyone else. It sounds to me like the league wants to see Lebron in the finals after his controversial season to jack up ratings.

If you love the NBA and are going to be disappointed to find out how corrupt it is then you might want to avoid this book. If you are tired of the league and its antics then you will love every page.

In my opinion, Donaghy came clean and broke the news the way it really is, the good the bad and the ugly. The result is a really fantastic book that I would recommend to most any basketball fan or casual observer.

David M. Friedman's A Mind of Its Own is a cultural examination of the penis, from ancient Sumer to the present. Friedman convincingly suggests that humankind's various and contradictory attitudes toward the penis have been instrumental in mapping the course of both Western civilization and world history.

Friedman begins with pagan attitudes: ancient Greeks considered the penis a measure of a man's proximity to "divine power," while the Romans, whose generals were known to promote soldiers based on penis size, saw it as an indicator of earthly strength. Thanks to the spread of Christianity, the "sacred staff became the demon rod"--a fearful manifestation of the devil. Theology gave way, grudgingly, to science. In the Renaissance, anatomical discoveries allowed for the possibility that this "agent of death" was, in fact, only a "blameless instrument of reproduction." Subsequent chapters discuss the penis's role as a racial yardstick; its "defining role in human personality" as asserted by Freud; its politicization; and finally, through the likes of Viagra, its objectification as a "thing ... impervious to religious teachings, psychological insights, racial stereotypes and feminist criticism."

Friedman's study of what he calls the "symbolic muscle" is filled with fascinating side trips (castration cults, ancient graffiti, the anti-masturbation "semen-retention movement," aphrodisiacs through the ages, and, to modern eyes, risible medical practices with the likes of monkey glands), as well as a rich cast of characters (Leonardo da Vinci, John Kellogg of cornflake fame, Kate Millet, Clarence Thomas, and Walt Whitman). "Over time, the penis has been deified, demonized, secularized, racialized, psychoanalyzed, politicized and, finally, medicalized," declares freelance journalist Friedman in a serious yet entertaining book that weaves together an enormous amount of material. In the Greek and Roman worlds, statues of figures with erections were commonplace, he observes, though by the Christian era, the penis had become a source of evil and weakness. Doctors and scientists from da Vinci onward "deflat[ed] the religious rhetoric" and scrutinized the male organ sometimes with untoward results, as when American "semen science" led to the creation of antimasturbation products such as Graham crackers. Western man's fear of the African phallus undergirded colonialism and slavery, and resonates to this day, Friedman argues, as was evident in the case of Clarence Thomas. If some of Freud's case histories might be questioned, Friedman notes how the psychoanalytic interpretation enduringly places the penis and associated anxieties at the fulcrum of society. The rise of feminism put the penis in its place, as The Hite Report pointed out the limits of conventional intercourse in moving women to orgasm, and as Andrea Dworkin exposed penile pathology though the author concludes that male sexuality arises more out of evolutionary strategy than misogyny. His final and liveliest chapter concerns the medicalization of the penis, culminating in Viagra. Even though Friedman quotes a (female) sex therapist on the limits of such drugs, he concludes optimistically that "the erection industry" has performed a paradigm shift, allowing man to impose his will below his belt. The book has a few gaps -- there's little about the gay penis -- but it should reign as the seminal treatment of this topic (and inspire many more puns).

An impressively research-prone journalist who has written for Esquire, Rolling Stone, and the Village Voice, Friedman has prepared a catalog of happenings and horrors perpetrated on the penis or in the name of the penis as an organ and as an idea. His opening chapter about religious teachings begins with a ghastly story about the torture of a witch who "knew the Devil's penis." Next come Tissot and the medical antimasturbation mania, plus biological discoveries about the organ. This is followed by an even more terrible and detailed discussion of racist stereotypes and violence relating to supposedly macrophallic Africans. Chapter 4 belongs to Dr. Freud, Chapter 5 to feminist criticism, and Chapter 6 to Viagra and the erection industry since ancient Egypt. Referenced in considerable (if not perfect) detail, the work could be improved only by textual subheads and (perhaps) illustrations. A fascinating and sobering complement to more lighthearted books, including Maggie Paley's The Book of the Penis (Grove, 2001), Joseph Cohen's The Penis Book (Konemann, 2001), and Kit Schwartz's The Male Member (St. Martin's, 1985). Owner's Manual

With chapter titles such as The Demon Rod, The Gear Shift, The Measuring Stick, The Cigar, The Battering Ram--how can you loose with giving this book as a gift to yourself, if you own a penis. Or to a spouse or lover if he has one.

"A man can hold his manhood in his hand, but who is really gripping whom?" The book is worth it for this Big Question alone.

As a retired priest I was a bit surprised that Friedman was spot on with the Roman Catholic theologian, Augustine:

"Augustine, the sainted Bishop of Hippo, found his answer sixteen centuries ago in a man's lack of control. It was a proof of man's alienation from the sacred, and a punishment for Adam's insult of God in Eden that original sin passed from one generation to the next through semen. In a culture where the Virgin symbolized all that was pure, the penis stood for all that was evil. What defined Mary's sanctity was her lack of contact with a penis."

This book seems as much poetry, humor and history as it is a polemic. Are you an all power to the penis type person? Then read this book. I'm glad I bought it.

interesting historiography

*A Mind of Its Own* started off fantastic, opening with how witches were burned for having contact with the "devil's rod". However, the book's ending wasn't quite as great, concluding with impotence and Viagra.

Friedman presented how the penis was viewed, throughout history, through various lens: historical, social, religious, psychological, medical and feminist. My only problem with this book was that the last half was mostly medical (Freud, psychology, psychoanalysis, penile reconstruction, testicular transplants, impotence, etc.). So, the end became a little dry.

There were a lot of information and tidbits that I didn't know about the penis. I'm sure that we're familiar about the Greek and Roman's view on and culture around the penis. However, there are so much more to know about these people. The pagan and the religious views were interesting as well. It was amazing to see that the early Christians had numerous dialogues on the penis, especially the semen.

I was very interested in reading about the history of the correlation between penis size and race. This wasn't about how a race or an ethnic group have been stereotyped on their penis size. It was more about the white view of the black penis and how they responded to it.

The feminist view on the penis was enlightening. I've always wanted to know exactly how it started and it pretty much made sense. However, it was interesting to see how the penis have divided women among themselves, despite them being avowed feminists.

I think there are so much more that Friedman could have covered in the cultural history of the penis. I wish that Friedman had included the pop cultural view of the penis. I can only think of one example that Friedman did. He mentioned Robert Mapplethorne's (sp?) (who was gay) controversial photo of a semi-erect black penis. Speaking of gay, I'm surprised that Friedman didn't bring up the homosexual view of the penis.

Nonetheless, you're going to read about so many people who have made a contribution or an impact on the penis. Such people are Da Vinci, Thomas Clarence, Freud and so many more. If you've always been curious how the penis have been viewed throughout history, then this book is for you.

Informative and More than a little Amusing...

A comprehensive look at the theories and assumptions man has made in study of his most perplexing organ. Including various famous historical figures and their amusing associations about the purpose and inner workings of the penis. Da Vinci, Rousseau,Twain, Whitman, just a few of the cultural geniuses discussed.

About the Author

Randal E. Bryant received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1973 and then attended graduate school at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, receiving his PhD degree in computer science in 1981. He spent three years as an assistant professor at the California Institute of Technology, and has been on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon since 1984. For five of those years he served as head of the Computer Science Department, and for ten of them he served as Dean of the School of Computer Science. He is currently a university professor of computer science. He also holds a courtesy appointment with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

                                                                          

Professor Bryant has taught courses in computer systems at both the undergraduate and graduate level for around 40 years. Over many years of teaching computer architecture courses, he began shifting the focus from how computers are designed to how programmers can write more efficient and reliable programs if they understand the system better. Together with Professor O’Hallaron, he developed the course 15-213, Introduction to Computer Systems, at Carnegie Mellon that is the basis for this book. He has also taught courses in algorithms, programming, computer networking, distributed systems, and VLSI design.

                                                                          

Most of Professor Bryant’s research concerns the design of software tools to help software and hardware designers verify the correctness of their systems. These include several types of simulators, as well as formal verification tools that prove the correctness of a design using mathematical methods. He has published over 150 technical papers. His research results are used by major computer manufacturers, including Intel, IBM, Fujitsu, and Microsoft. He has won several major awards for his research. These include two inventor recognition awards and a technical achievement award from the Semiconductor Research Corporation, the Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award from the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM), and the W. R. G. Baker Award, the Emmanuel Piore Award, the Phil Kaufman Award, and the A. Richard Newton Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He is a fellow of both the ACM and the IEEE and a member of both the US National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

                                                                          

David R. O’Hallaron is a professor of computer science and electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his PhD from the University of Virginia. He served as the director of Intel Labs, Pittsburgh, from 2007 to 2010.

                                                                          

He has taught computer systems courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels for 20 years on such topics as computer architecture, introductory  computer systems, parallel processor design, and Internet services. Together with Professor Bryant, he developed the course at Carnegie Mellon that led to this book. In 2004, he was awarded the Herbert Simon Award for Teaching Excellence by the CMU School of Computer Science, an award for which the winner is chosen based on a poll of the students.

                                                                          

Professor O’Hallaron works in the area of computer systems, with specific interests in software systems for scientific computing, data-intensive computing, and virtualization. The best-known example of his work is the Quake project, an endeavor involving a group of computer scientists, civil engineers, and seismologists who have developed the ability to predict the motion of the ground during strong earthquakes. In 2003, Professor O’Hallaron and the other members of the Quake team won the Gordon Bell Prize, the top international prize in high-performance computing. His current work focuses on the notion of autograding, that is, programs that evaluate the quality of other programs.

Great textbook.

This book is very readable. It gives you a pretty comprehensive tour of modern computer system while leaving many unnecessary details out.

That being said, I think there are times when the authors can be more concise (e.g. chap 2 is too "mathematical"). As I know this book is usually used for a second/third undergraduate CS course, so putting too many details in the book is kind of demanding.

Doing the labs is an indispensable part of reading this book. They can be found on the book site and they are amazingly fun.

Some people have pointed out that this book is too "academic." Even though that is true to some extent, I think this book is still a must-read since it is meant to give you a good foundation. Once you are done with this book it is fairly easy to pick up "industry" knowledge.

Music Theory and Ear Training

In Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts, students follow their friends Mozarts Mouse and Beethoven Bear in exploration of musical sounds and concepts as they learn to play piano. The workbook has written and listening exercises to strengthen young students' aural skills. There is actually only one coloring assignment, which is to color Mozart Mouse and Beethoven Bear at the beginning of the book. This can be done for homework if instructors do not want to use up valuable lesson time coloring.

The exercises in the workbook are fun and easy and correspond to exercises in the Little Mozarts lesson book. I recommend using the workbook along with the lesson book, discovery book and flash cards. See my review of the Deluxe Starter Kit, which includes these materials, along with the Mozart Mouse and Beethoven Bear plush toys.

My one complaint is that the note 'G' is not covered in the first level.

Fun supplement to the Lesson book

I bought this book to use with a 5-year-old piano student of mine. I had started her in the Alfred Basic Prep Level A, which is where I would normally start a kindergarten student. She was instantly taken with the characters. I used the lesson book and this workbook, and she started to make great progress.
Sometimes "theory" can be tough for students to complete. This book has lots of color-by-note and other activities that don't seem like such tough work. (What kid doesn't enjoy coloring?) I think of this more like the Notespeller books from the Prep and Basic series, rather than the Theory books. At any rate, she didn't object to doing any of the activities, so that's good.
